    Favorite needle nose pliers

I have an orange leatherman skeletool. I like the color in case I drop it, the knife, the pliers, and the wire cutters. Pliers have picked quills out more than once from dogs.

One last time I would recommend re-reading post #8 of this thread.

Pup going to training for a month

Agree with last couple posts. It’s the losses that always bother me throughout the season. I would choose my shots more carefully if my losses were in the double digits.

Pup going to training for a month

“I don’t need a NAVDHA dog as I’m literally a weekend warrior.” “That said I want a hunting partner…” NAVHDA is a great training network for all kinds of people, trust me there’s plenty of members who don’t even qualify as weekend warriors. A training club of any kind is a great way to help...

Pup going to training for a month

From what I remember, you put the dog on a lot of birds early but didn’t really have him steady or under control- we’ve all been anxious as first time bird dog owners. Now the trainer has to correct steadiness, obedience, retrieve, among other things. To me, that’s asking a lot of the dog in a...

How long do you hunt your dogs?

Agree mostly with @dakotasj on above. Off season conditioning and know your dog’s limits. When we plan out longer trips, we break it up and do a travel/ scouting day or a fishing day so dogs can rest. Makes the trip more enjoyable.

    How to Shoot a Bird

Many people like to fix poor shooting with fit, LOP, drop, etc rather than learning proper gun mounting fundamentals.

Getting on pheasants during the summer?

WI has a bird dog training permit. Easy to get at a dnr office. I think it was $25 for 2 or 3 years. Gives you options to run your dog off leash year round. Maybe convienent depending on your location.

From IOWA hunting regulations: WHERE RESTRICTED. All dogs are prohibited on all state-owned game management areas be- tween March 15 and July 15 of each year, except that dog training is permitted on designated training areas. Field and retriever meets are restricted to designated sites. A...

When do you start running your dogs?

Here in WI, the DNR has set aside some areas for year round dog training. Nice for keeping the dog conditioned. Also have a couple local areas with water that are dog friendly. Get out early in the day before the heat!
