    Bug Bites

Hunted both mornings, I was done way before noon and the real warm temps. No bites on me. Sounds like you were near my part of the state, what county were you in? The real question is: How was the hunting?

    NEW CRP PROJECT

They always seem to sneak the Virginia or Canada wildrye into these mixes, it must be cheap. Fine for the the birds, not the best for dogs. You have tons of diversity in those mixes, they could be called Biden Specials, sorry couldn't help myself. The more plant species you use, the more...

4th weekend of season and the temps are warmer than a typical opening day here.

It is alway a good feeling to see evidence the birds are using the food plot you made for them...

Do u shoot a second time at a bird that’s been hit?

Bet them birds are "shot to shit" when you clean them. I am NOT a great shot, just good enough to get the bird on the deck most of the time, and my birds are often peppered with just one helping of 1.25 oz of 5s. You retired guys and having the time to pick-up a shot guns on the off...

Do u shoot a second time at a bird that’s been hit?

Unless that bird is still able to provide some bit levitation, my reflexes and brain aren't reacting quick enough to make this happen. To make that falling bird shot, after you determine in your brain "it might not be dead", " I think I should maybe shoot it again". Your brain is working at a...

4th weekend of season and the temps are warmer than a typical opening day here.

Still plenty warm today. Got going around 9:00. Was looking for a shorter walk today. I skipped some of the "slower" parts and just walked straight back to the half mile line and got to the "good stuff". I had 2 in 2 shots pretty quickly. Then on the 3rd bird, I felt I was a bit behind and...

4th weekend of season and the temps are warmer than a typical opening day here.

We started right about at 8:00, full sun and a bit of breeze. Temp was just shy of 50*, a long sleeve shirt with a hunting vest and no gloves, which I do enjoy. We each got our first birds within seconds of each other. My second try was a runner and was lost. I got 2 more not too much later...

4th weekend of season and the temps are warmer than a typical opening day here.

Whoa, the temp is 48* already here in NW Iowa (supposed to be over 60* by noon). I hope the Dakotas aren't this warm too. I have a friend going with me this morning, we will get going right at 8:00 and trust we can be home before 11:00 (maybe 10:00). I have been sick (not covid) since last...

    NEW CRP PROJECT

I hope you get a bit of snow once the drilling is done. You will get the benefits of seed stratification and the snow pushing the seed in. Bet you get a good stand in the spring. Must be a local seed company (Hawkeye tall grass and Cyclone short). What grasses are those mixes composed of?

    New old guy

2 of most anything or one of anything less than custom. Unless boot prices have gone up like groceries. One thing that seams to have changed for folks here, is that most rely on a GPS collar systems to keep track of their dog. A decent load of 5s and you are in business. I have shot prairie...

Hunting the public ROW - Thoughts?

Don't pull that attitude if you can see a backhoe parked in their (or a neighbor's) building site.

I am not sure you are correct. A couple months ago, there was a thread about, things you have learned or something like that, one thing I remembered was "90% of the time I hunt alone, the other 10% of the time I wish I did". If you're around SF, the hunting should be somewhat close and the...

Yah. This one has been a wild SOB. He seems to have the anxiety issues about being left behind. Around my back door and the window next to it, will need some work, once this dog is done. When I picked him up, there was also a little female in the room, she was a terror, fighting stuffed toys...

But he needs one. Once he goes out with someone with a dog, he will know he needs one.

Carptom is right, my second dog (current one) came to be just like that. She is still a bit hostile about it, but it has only been 4 years. If the dog does anything wrong, it is MY dog, no joint ownership or accountability with this one. Is it worth it? Heck yes! Can't imagine not having...

    Ground-pounding opinions

I most of my hunting habitat, you will not see a wounded rooster if it isn't in the dogs mouth or within a yard or 2 of the dog. With the recent snow, it had much of the switch grass leaning over with a bit of snow on it. Hunting food plots adjacent to the switchgrass is where my 3 birds came...

    Bells on flushers

I haven't had a lot of trouble with snow, but I know what you mean. One cold morning there was a ton of frost on the grass, that frost seemed to migrate into the bell and quite it down. The locate feature on my SportDog is usually essential in finding the dog once on point.
