Do we need to get away from plastic ?

I don't think the plastic hulls or wads are an issue. I have received older wads from gun shows, that have already became brittle and are disintegrating. I assume these have living by a window and have had a bunch of sunlight exposure. The hulls, I shoot the gray Win AAs with an autoloader...

    Them Changes

So that ground in the pic is getting paid to allow hunting? Is that right? They need a number for turning-in those acres....put up a couple bill boards with a $50 reward and every parcel in the state would be turned-in that was out of compliance with the program. Around me there isn't a lot...

While I was out hunting this morning.....

While I was out hunting this morning, my wife had a bird encounter. We live in-town, be it a small town, but several blocks into town. This morning she decided to open the bedroom window as it air seemed a bit "stale". Once opened, she hears a rooster crow. She looks out the window as a...

    Them Changes

Yes, I do believe that. I don't think they have a huge effect on the numbers. I think weather is the number one thing that effects the population....as long as you have the habitat. I think the raptors get more pheasants in my area than the furry ones.

Nice morning to shake it up a bit.

I am having my cousins hunt next Sunday, so I decided to give the birds in our CRP a 2 week break prior to "The Rooster Round-Up". I decided to try a friend's waterways, he has 2 farms with some good cover. Once they are gone (both in their 80's) I am thinking those farms will be tiled-out and...

    Them Changes

The only time in Iowa I can remember low bird numbers was after severe winters. Back in the early 2000s the bird numbers were so low, I didn't hunt them, and I had a dog. The few surviving birds were mostly around building sites with good conifer shelterbelts and active bins sites or livestock...

Asking a favor-history of pheasant hunting

If you are a PF member, the 2025 Upland Bird Super Issue had a great article on the history of pheasants and pheasant hunting in Iowa (A Century of Iowa Pheasant Hunting). It shows in the 60s Iowa had harvests of almost 2 million birds a season. The old boys in their 80s and 90s are who you...

Asking a favor-history of pheasant hunting

Thus the reason for hunting regulations. Well, change in habitat likely played as big of a factor.

What’s farmland selling for in your area(s)?

I heard a couple good farms near me sold for $20K this week and a couple rougher pieces with some pasture ground sold for $8K and $9K. Doesn't really pencil out with $4 corn, even with corn yields around 270 or beans at 70/acre this year....it was a great production year with the wet summer we had.

What’s farmland selling for in your area(s)?

Did PF have to out-bid the farmers or were the landowners who were selling, wanting it to go to PF and sold directly to them, maybe even at a below market price? Great for PF and all public ground hunters!!!

    Increasing Dog’s Energy Level

A buddy of mine had what was supposed to be a purebred GSP...I never thought it was, just by looking at it. That dog would lay down in the middle of a hunt, after hours, not minutes. Normally they won't quit,. On a warm day, I think they would die hunting if you let them go. Sounds like...

    Snacks, Meals?

There is usually a box of Little Debbie's in my truck. I generally eat breakfast, so I seldom am grabbing those. A 20oz Dt. Dew is generally consumed on the way home. The closest thing I have traveling to bird hunt, is traveling to shoot prairie dawgs. I take a 2 burner 413 Coleman stove...

    Getting Old Sucks

Dang air medic, your a mess! They can do amazing things these days for sure. IHope the recovery goes as planned. I am just breaking into the 60s and have had several back issues, heart issues and now the normal joint pains coming on. I am thankful to have the habitat to be able to hunt for a...

    Copper Shot?

I think A5 is the only one with much of a chance on 50 yard crossers, sporting that full choke tube and an autoloader. Maybe if BB were here, he could make that shot and then shoot it again before it is on the deck...just to make sure. I find pheasants that are much closer to me (than 50...
