Mine is 10. She was a handful for several years. Her hunting instincts are 110% non stop. I've still never seen her lay down outside and just relax. She points pheasants well but when we Grouse hunt she's usually out of sight and learned to flush them when I'm not within site. It has worked out...
All of my groups dogs are all business in the field. No playing and no fighting. That would not be tolerated. Not even out of the field. Luckily I've never seen it.
Tough weekend for my buddy and I. 4 on sat and zero today (Sunday). Corn still not all in but better than opening weekend. Anybody not seeing any standing corn is hunting in a bubble.
I would like to send my best wishes to all the farmers in north central and north west Iowa.
NOW START YOUR COMBINES AND MOW DOWN SOME CORN THIS WEEK PLEASE!!!!! :)
I carry a steel comb, a burr brush and scissors. I have used the scissors a lot on my goldens. My last golden looked pretty rough by season end but she didn't know any different.
And boy do they last. The colors never seem to fade. I have 3 and have known the secret for years. I mainly only wear them deer hunting. I don't want them to wear out!
My Pudelpointer didn't point until well past a year. Not until she had contact with a few birds. Then BAM. Everytime for 9 years now. Except grouse in cover. She learned pointing them out of my site is,,,wait for it,,,pointless. lol
For pure comfort and mostly Grouse hunting I've had good luck with Under Armour. I have two pair but all their models look weird now and they seemed to have veered from hunting. Most of it labeled as tactical and black.
My Thunderstruck golden is 1.5 years now. Expensive but no health issues so far and a classic field golden. Has trained well and very gamey. She has not proven herself on pheasants yet but I am confident she will. Slow to mature but turning into a great dog. Fetching fool and can't keep her out...
Once in a while. Usually only when they stink. From now until fall maybe once or twice because they swim in clean water every weekend. Maybe. Golden and Pudelpointer.
I have always had toppers and we kennel our dogs back there when the temps are right. Too hot or too cold and we take one of my buddies suburbans. If hunting alone my dogs always ride in the cab with me.
