    Motels

Just finding one that takes dogs is the hard part. After that it's whatever they say. Our dog cost $20 per night extra last weekend. We have about 4 we rotate through depending on the area. One mainly. All are reasonable and accommodating. I love the sign I saw at the check in desk last...

Dry Aging (possession limit vs daily limit)

We used to clean our birds at the hotel or home. Now it's strictly on the side of the road. Throwaway stuff goes in a garbage bag and back to a garbage can. Except for maybe a single head we usually set up in the ditch grass for the eagle eyed road hunters. Lol

    Iowa report from today

Depends on your definition of road hunting. It is legal to walk on a dirt road or in the ditch to hunt in Iowa. Kevin is correct about driving. If you happen to see a bird while driving you can exit your vehicle, uncase/load your gun and go after it. Im not certain how far you must be from your...

    Ditch hunting

Birds shot legally are not cheating. A ditch is a narrow field. The laws are clear on what you can and can't do and how to retrieve game on private land. I consider it a great privilege to have so much more area to hunt and not have to fight for position on public fields that are inevitably over...

    Iowa report from today

My wife likes to go with me once per season to walk and see our dogs work. This was the weekend and it was fun. I got my limit by 1:45 on Fri but it took until 3 on Sat. Man the wind was horrible Sat. Strictly ditch hunting. Ditches are always a mixture of reading the terrain and luck. We did a...

    Released birds on public land.

We run into mentally challenged wild birds occasionally. On opener my dog got one up while hunting a long ways from my buddies when we split up. It was really stupid from the get go and I couldn't shoot it because it was too close to my dog. It flew directly to my buddies and provided an easy...

I'm always in for a road hunting rodeo🤠

We were putting the sneak on a covey of huns on opener and nearly stepped on a rooster. We were so focused on the huns it got away without a scratch. 2 of us didn't even shoot and the 3rd guy basically threw a fu shot at it late. Otherwise it was a chip shot any other time. We did manage one hun...

    1 year old pup limping

Ive had dogs with minor leg injuries many many times. I used to rush them to the vet and spend hundreds but experience has taught me what is serious and what is not. Mostly it just takes 2-3 days and you would not want to hunt them until healed.

    Semi Automatic 20 Gauge Recommendations

Same. It's been my Grouse woods companion for a loooong time. It's acting up now so I'm taking it to a gunsmith. It cost me a bird last weekend. Been meaning to buy a backup for years. Probably a Montifeltro.

My Benelli M2 has been a machine. My more recent Franchi Affinity works the same.

    Iowa Pheasants

I have found far less burrs/stickers in Iowa than mn. Far less. One HUGE difference is you can hunt ditches in Iowa. That opens up a LOT of territory and all but eliminates unwanted competition. Thousands of miles of narrow fields. Finding the right ones is the trick.

    Golden retriever hair/fur product

Been hunting goldens for years. I pull out what I can then scissor out the bad stuff. They look like hell by end of season but it quickly grows out after season. I consider the extra hair expendable armour. My lab buddies with their perfect bur free hair can kma. 😁
