Why do the wildlife folks cut every tree

I've hunted both extensively. Kansas is at historic lows and MN still hasn't caught up, in part because...you guessed it, Kansas has a much more extensive range of relatively treeless prairie, and hence, more pheasants. I do agree that the best parts of Minnesota are going to have more abundant...

Why do the wildlife folks cut every tree

There's a reasons there are more pheasants in South Dakota, North Dakota and Kansas than there are in Minnesota, and it's not cause those states have more trees...

    Upland Forecast

The state should drop about 75% of it's WIHA acreage anyway. The program has devolved into just another form of farmer welfare, and you would almost not believe the corruption involved in WIHA contracts at this point.

    Upland Forecast

I hunt almost exclusively private land in Kansas and I'll warn you frankly, it is not worth paying to hunt pheasants in Kansas. If I wasn't from there, or didn't have access to private land, or didn't have a pretty deep emotional investment in being there, I wouldn't even spend the gas and hotel...

    Montana

It's pretty shocking to me they allow this practice to continue. Maybe it doesn't have a deleterious effect, but it's hard to imagine how it wouldn't. I assume this is mostly done on sharptails? Cause it doesn't seem like there's enough pheasants in Montana to sustain it.

    Chick Sightings?

I've hunted miles and miles of wheat stubble in western KS. Usually large party hunting, but I've had very productive wheat stubble hunts.

    Start of Prairie Chicken Season

Run the ridges. Sunny side in the morning when it's dewy, shady side when its warm out. If you put a couple up, watch for stragglers. Focus on big, short (ankle-knee high), sparse stands of native grass.

    MN Pheasant Map 2023

Count me as not getting too excited about year over year percentage changes. 2 pheasants is a 100% increase over 1.
