    Shooting Woes - Help Needed

A Briley Light Mod is hard to beat on pheasants. It stays in my gun all season.

    Pointer or flusher debate

I am searching for a field cocker as we speak. After 45 years of labradors, I am going to a smaller dog.

    Shooting Woes - Help Needed

I don't know how everyone else shoots, but I am much slower at pulling the trigger than walk213. He looks rushed and pulling the trigger way too quick for me. My entire hunting career, I have shouldered the gun on every hawk, sparrow, black bird, meadowlark, and follow with the bead pretending...

    Loosing birds

Different shells will pattern different out of different chokes. You can optimize your weapon. Gun fit is also a big part of shooting better. If you don't believe that, you aren't helping this man.

    Loosing birds

Lol you got to be kidding me. $200 is expensive. That is 3 tanks of gas. Cheap in my book. Keep wounding birds I guess.

It is you. You are not killing birds dead and your not training your dogs. Until you admit that nothing will change.

    Loosing birds

No there are a lot of hunters that enjoy success like me. Keep doing what you are doing or try to fix it. I offered you some quality advice. I didn't see many today and only got one shot. Dead bird in the vest. Would have kept hunting but dog was limping.

    Loosing birds

I have looked for close to an hour before finding them. Quit shooting inexpensive shells, buy a quality aftermarket choke from Briley or Carlson, pattern your shells and choke, check your drop and cast for POI, and make sure your LOP is correct. You are obviously not putting the bird in the...

    Loosing birds

Shells most certainly do matter. So does choke, patterning, and gun fit. They all matter. A 12 gauge with a LM choke shooting Kent Ultimate Fast lead 6's 1 3/8 is the perfect combo for me. Make sure you gun is shooting a 55/45 or 60/40 pattern. Make sure your length of pull is correct. 1...

    Pad care?

I know none of us want to, but that injury requires a month off. Not doing so may cause it not to heal correctly. Dogs aren't like us, they don't quit. It's our job to rest them, I wouldn't hunt a dog with that injury til it's healed. Epsom salts, tuff foot, and rest will heal it fine...

    Cimarron this weekend?

Not for sure about Cimarron, but I am a little nervous about hunting tomorrow. We had quite a bit of ice and in my yard the grass is covered in ice and it is very sharp. I won't let my dogs run around in the yard. My female went out to air and had cut her foot in less than 5 minutes.

    Flinty Hills

I highly doubt 200 plus years ago that the prairie burned every 3 years. Some estimates say every 5-20 years the prairie burned from lightening strikes. But it was a healthy ecosystem back then free of man, cattle, chemicals, irrigation pipe, and barb wire. Man, and his ideas and management...

    Flinty Hills

There is tall prairie grass in the flint hills? Looks like nothing but overgrazed pasture land now, which helped produce the cedar invasion. In the mid 80's, that prairie grass started disappearing, and along with it went the prairie chicken. Traveling from Wichita to Severy in the 70's and...

    Ringing in 2025 correctly!

A good spring hatch and no emergency grazing and haying, and it will be a great year next fall. People need to leave them alone this week. We got right at 12 inches of snow with a lot of ice. Extremely cold temps this week but hopefully back it next weekend.
