    Them Changes

I also do not think predators have that much to do with it. When southern Iowa was at it's peak, you would not believe the number of predators. It's mostly farming practices and loss of crp. Another thing people don't think about is field tiling. When you do away with waterways you do away with...

    Indoor Hunting Dogs

Mine are not too bad in the off season. They will calmly watch me until I put my boots on. Then they get excited. They even get noticeably more excited when I put on lace ups compared to slip Ons. But when the weather gets cool, they go crazy every time I walk into my hunting room. Then they get...

Asking a favor-history of pheasant hunting

Not pheasant but.. My grandpa was a sharecropper. Him and grandma raised 9 kids. He had a huge smokehouse that he used to smoke meat for other people for a small portion. He was a very quiet, proud man who never accepted any help form anyone outside the family. My childhood lays out in my mind...

    Bug Bites

Maybe chiggers, but that sounds too excessive for them. They usually don't get above the waist.

how do you handle different shells for mixed bag?

If you think about it, instead of swapping shells, the old poly choke would make a lot of sense when in quail and pheasant ground. Heavy load 5's or 6's...

Anyone have bolt action 12 ga experience ?

The jc Higgins is probably a Mossberg or stevens. My brothers had a Mossberg 16 when we were kids. I don't remember having any problems with it. And yes, Gun broker has a lot of them.

    28 gauge

Again, I think my uggy 28 with an oz. of shot will shoot with any 20 with the same oz. I also think an oz. of shot is not enough to consistently kill WILD pheasants unless you pick your shots. I'll go a little farther and say, a 1 1/8 oz out of a 16 gauge at 40 yards, you better have a good dog.

Lets talk cleaning/processing after the hunt

I quick clean, cutting away any shot up pieces. Into the Ice filled cooler, If I'm out west. When I get home, cleaned a little better, pick random feathers and into the fridge in salt water. Then after a day or so, into the sink for final cleaning. Ten smash dry in towels. Then into the vacuum...

    New upland vest

I bought a Filson waxed cotton last year on ebay, never had a bird in it. Very well made, looked like it would last a lifetime. But it was way too heavy for me. Gave it to my grandson and bought the Filson Armadillo. Very satisfied with it. Got plenty of room in the game bag, very comfortable...

What’s farmland selling for in your area(s)?

I heard the biggest farmer in my county say that a tree or blade of grass is nothing but a weed to him, it's got to go.

how do you handle different shells for mixed bag?

After having roosters get up at 30 yards a few times while having 7.5 light loads in, I don't even carry them. I'll take a breath and try to make the shot at longer ranges. I do however leave a couple boxes in the truck in case I want to just hunt quail for whatever reason.

What’s farmland selling for in your area(s)?

Yup, that's what is happening here. If it can be plowed and planted, it is. I've seen hillsides that never raises corn over 3 feet high but continues to be planted every year.
