How many of you let birds go?

When I used to duck hunt a lot I pretty much moved to drake mallards only. Drake duck of another species may get shot if the limit is constructed that way. Others shot the first six ducks they legally could take. Pheasant hunting - there are sometimes when I am taking a photo of a bird...

    Land prices.

Think of a generational farm with a couple of younger next gen farmers or father - adult son (or daughter) looking to expand. Cash rent becomes the only viable option ? Some of the land price escalation is due to investment groups buying land. … Similar to what is going on with single...

    Trouble with Whoa teaching

Maybe one option for new pointing dog owners is to attend a weekend workshop. Smith Brothers travel the US. They have been training Britts for a very long time

    Trouble with Whoa teaching

I agree Britts are pretty soft tempered with people and you can certainly make them timid or reluctant with aggressive or forced training methods. Do not equate that behavior with their intense ability to hunt and find birds.

    Trouble with Whoa teaching

My current youngest Brittany learned to whoa on walks. Learned it well after just a week (walking almost daily). Sometimes I have 3 Britts on the walk ... say whoa ... they all still freeze. My 15-year-old sometimes looks at me "saying" what are we doing ? They hold whoa until I release...

Side note: Dog in the photos above is still alive at 15 years old. Retired her after her 12 years old season.

    MN grouse hunters...

Grand Rapids and Iron Range area. Wolves displace bears. Bears also get hunted ... wolves ... not so much legally anyways. Locals in the Arrowhead region ... I am pretty sure abide by the don't ask don't tell.

    Ticks

I tend to believe your vet on NexGard. I may see a tick or two on my dog on the way home and pick them off and toss them out the window, but I have never seen more than a few. Rarely if ever do I see a tick on them in the house and if there is a rogue tick in the house it more likely came of...

    Ticks

My dogs had ticks on them in March. Deer ticks in MN get active on the first warm spell. Tick pill works extraordinarily well for the dogs.

    Spring wild turkey

I hunted Kansas once about 20 years ago. We had very good success hunting WIHAs. Interestingly the farm we had permission to hunt on put most of his better "turkey" land into that WIHA program. We were amazed at the large number of birds seen from the road driving/scouting around ...

    Spring wild turkey

We usually hunt later season in MN and WI and do quite well. Fewer birds, pressured birds by that time of the year. If you are confident in your calling they still come in. I have found that a pair or trio of Toms will be more aggressive in coming in than a single gobbler during these...

    Spring wild turkey

I have killed more than one gobbler by pissing off his hen enough that she comes in to shut me up and he follows her in.

    Recent dog food experience

80% lean (undrained) hamburger provides our bird dogs with that extra protein and fat and also that extra incentive to eat when exhausted. I can crumble up a pound or two and keep in a baggie in a cooler on trips. I have fed IAMs to all my bird dogs. Lamb and rice to bird dogs and senior...

At what age you cut down dogs?

I always try to have two dogs of hunting age at all times. Often own three dogs (puppy, retired dog, etc). I rarely hunt the two dogs together. One dog with one, two or maybe on occasion three hunters is all that is really needed. I like to rotate dogs because it keeps them fresh.

    Aberdeen area

The further you get out of Aberdeen (or any other larger town) the more likely you are able to find a true motel where you park your truck in front of your room. When I was younger we loved to be able to do this. Couple lawn chairs, cold brew, and the barbeque cooking the wild game to...

    Lots of hunters

Nothing kills an unnamed Dakota (ND or SD) prairie lake (once a pothole now a fishery) than word of mouth ... I suppose especially those that just have to share where they caught all those perch or 'eyes. Forums usually moderate, edit, and/or refrain from actual locations ... but not FB...

    Corner crossings

The WY Federal land checkerboard was a "cluster" from the beginning. It should not have been set up that way. The only real answer on access is EASEMENTS. If you purchase any private land that is not bound by a road, legal public section line, etc... you better have an easement onto...
