    Just made reservations

My grand plan one day is to pull a tiny camper behind the truck and drift with the wind for a couple weeks.

Can you open up the chamber of a 2 3/4" shotgun to shoot 3" shells?

Yes a gunsmith can lengthen the chamber. Many older English guns had 2.5 inch chamber and been lengthened to 2.75

What do you mean it’s not dead yet?

Caught a rooster in my grandpa’s tool shed. In wrestling it in a feed sack we thought we killed it. My Dad was not pleased and insisted we at least clean and eat it. First pull on the feathers, like a phoenix it came fully back to life. We got him back in the sack and released unharmed.

    Corn and lots of it

After day 2 the corn is officially cramping my style. Just about all my spots have a field or 3 of standing corn around them. When you do get birds up they head straight for it. Passed on a few shots knowing they would fall in the corn. Might come back in a couple weeks.

    SD season thus far….

Hunting public kingsbury county. Impressed with bird numbers. Lots of corn still standing but they’re working on it. Showed up to a spot and combine had 3 passes to go and ran a mess of em out. We had a ball. Never seen another hunter out in the field all day. 1 shy of 3 man limit...

Anyone give up another form of hunting all together to just hunt birds instead?

Buy my duck stamp deer tags trapping fishing hunting license every year. When faced with the occasional non hunter, anti hunter I simply ask how much they given to conservation habitat etc. They always answer zero. I proudly say I’m in for $100 every year. I also inform anyone who’ll listen...

Anyone give up another form of hunting all together to just hunt birds instead?

Hunting birds is active hunting. Done my share of ambushing deer from a tree stand…bor ring. Granted when Harry Hatrack shows up the adrenaline starts a pumpin! Grew up fez and rabbit hunting and deer drives during gun week. Active hunting.

    Full Blaze Orange Reminders

Had an Aunt who was eccentric to say the least. Literally painted the word horse clear across the side of an old nag in red paint.

I took a vacation day and hunted

Seen many a rabbit and pheasant dive bombed by hawks from the combine. Rarely have they been successful. Most times it looks like a car crash, both rolling and tumbling, regaining their feet and going separate ways. Coyotes and Fox, certainly hawks have all learned to shadow farm equipment...

How far do you let your dogs go?

Hunt over ES, she’s in turbo mode most of the day. I don’t like her out past 50 yds which means I have the controller in hand most of the time. She listens and is obedient but it can be tiring. IMHO it depends on the dog. Does she creep?, does she bump birds? Does she miss birds behind...

    Heat

Last week we had very hot dry conditions. Numerous combine fires. Had one myself, burnt up bout an acre of beans and part of my leg. FD put it out just in time. Big thanks to them. Finally got much needed rain yesterday, over 3” in parts.

    Stacked loads

Picked up Migra 12 gauge stacked loads 4’s over 6’s. Can’t wait to try em out. Realize this was tried in the past but I had to buy a box. They have dove, field, and waterfowl loads as well. Poor ole birds ain’t got a chance.

    Preferred/best pheasant shells?

Off topic, was recently in Mich grouse hunting. Stopped at Jays sporting goods, great store, picked ip a box of Migra 12 gauge stacked loads. 4’s over 6’s. Know it’s been tried in the past but I believe the smaller was over the larger. Anyway, gimmicky yes, am I chomping the bit to put one a...

    Late 1950s Sweet 16

My Dad also has a model 11 Remington. I’m the son of a certified gun nut that leans towards shotguns. He just brought home a beauty of a model 12 in 12.

    Late 1950s Sweet 16

Killed my first deer with one my Dad bought at auction summer before seasoned opened. On the way out a feller saw us carrying it and remarked “it’s a killer.” I’ll never forget that. Still love seeing purple shells
