    Shooting style

If you think a shotgun is to be aimed like a rifle, you probably struggle to hit any crossing targets. This first video may help to understand why.

    Shooting style

Chris Batha has said: "(In shotgunning) there are two things you should see but never look at, the bead and the lead."

    Road Signs and WMA Signs

Yes, I remember high school. Me and the friends that I hunted with couldn't afford to use ammunition on road signs.

    Road Signs and WMA Signs

I once read: An infinite number of rednecks shooting shotguns at an infinite number of road signs could eventually reproduce all the great works of Shakespeare...in Braille.

    Road Signs and WMA Signs

I have never been that drunk. If anyone hunting with me ever shot road signs, it would be my last hunt with them.

    Road Signs and WMA Signs

A couple of days ago, a friend and I ran his dog on a WMA. As we pulled into a recently mowed parking area, we noted that the metal signs marking the location had been shot several times. I have never looked at a road sign or WMA sign and thought: "That is a target and I need to shoot it."...

    Meat handling while traveling

I used to clean pheasants after a day of hunting. I dreaded that chore at the end of a long day of hunting. I do not do that anymore, unless I plan to eat pheasant on the trip, I leave the birds whole as long as I can keep them below about 40 degrees. I clean the birds after I get home. If...

How many of you let birds go?

Have I got this correct? You do not shoot young roosters but you do shoot hens.

How many of you let birds go?

You can tell it's the off season. Some of you are overthinking this $41t. I have never shot a bird that cackled that didn't have spurs.

Do you add anything to your dogs water while hunting

In very cold weather, I have had difficulty getting my dog to hydrate. I add powdered beef broth to the water. It helps a great deal.

Where to hunt with hopes of success

A number of the public lands in the upper Thumb area have excellent pheasant habitat. Like a previous poster said, the HAP properties can be very good too. Many are selected for their pheasant habitat. It has been 6 years since I lived and hunted in that area, but I did quite well. This...

How many of you let birds go?

Why? A young bird is less likely to survive the upcoming winter than a mature bird.

Franchi 48 AL front sight bead?

I would simply take it to a gun shop. Most will have a selection of beads to choose from.

    Really Late Hatch Birds?

I ran my dog yesterday, for the first time this season, on a WMA not far from town. She had two solid points. The first one produced a bird that was smaller than my fist and seemed incapable of flight. It simply chirped and stumbled off. I didn't think it could possibly have been a pheasant...

Kent upland sale rodgers sporting goods

They did sell us plastic shot at one time. It was very effective. I wish they would bring it back. TUNGSTEN MATRIX Kent manufactures this non-toxic lead alternative by combining pure tungsten powder with a polymer binder. This patented process creates pellets with the density and...

Memorable quotes to think about as the bird seasons approach

My favorite pheasant hunting quote, I first saw on this site: "It is always better to shoot a pheasant at the end the corn goes in than the the end the corn comes out " I do not know who deserves credit for that gem.

Cooking Own Meals at the Motel

I have cooked meals with a Coleman stove outside the hotel quite often while bird hunting. Also, it is quite enjoyable to take a break and cook lunch in the field on the tailgate. Burritos or hamburgers are quite easy to make.

How many of you let birds go?

I will shoot (or at least shoot at) any legal bird that my dog points or flushes in range. (I have a pointing Lab.) I offer the argument that it makes biological sense to shoot young birds, as more mature birds are better able to avoid predators and survive winter to breed the following spring.

    Spring wild turkey

I very much agree with you here. A standard full choke and most any pheasant load will kill turkeys cleanly to 38 yards or so. I once tried a turkey choke and found it very difficult to hit birds with it. This week's episode of Michigan Out of Doors contains a turkey hunt starting at about...
