    The harvest is on!

Hunted around Pierre opening weekend. Beans mostly combined, more corn, sunflowers, and milo still in the field than in the bin. Still had a good time though.

    Early season thoughts

The last hour and half Sunday was about as good as I’ve ever seen as far as numbers of birds in front of my dog for him to work. The resting the day Sunday was slow. When crops are out it looks promising to me, as a fairly rookie SD hunter.

    2023 Trip Planning Help

We got pheasants, a sharpie, and a chicken out of the same field Saturday. The bonus birds were just flying in over us. Chicken was flying with the flock of sharpies, but there was already at least one chicken in the field because it kept playing leap frog with me the whole field. Just couldn’t...

Why is deer hunting so popular?

I don’t understand this statement. I’ve shot (or my kid) several (September youth and muzzleloader seasons in Kansas, early antlerless in MO) when it was 90s for temps. 2 this year. Shoot. Quarter. Cooler with ice. Zero spoilage.

Why is deer hunting so popular?

I shot a doe last night. Purely because I want lean meat for jerky/sausage/pastrami. I enjoy making it. I enjoy eating it. I enjoy giving those away to others who act like you just have them a shiny new car. My boy got one a month ago. I hope to get 1 or 2 more before end of January. I’m lucky...

    Meat Handling on the Road

Same. Completely skin the bird, leaving the gray part of lower leg with spur. We leave both legs attached until after skinning. Then cut off the lower foot that is attached to the leg in the worst condition (cut one off before skinning, then come to find out the upper leg is shot to heck and...

    Meat Handling on the Road

What states are requiring a wing to be attached to a pheasant for identification? Foot for us. I never knew the 2 bird per bag if frozen that BrownDogsCan2 just mentioned, just looked it up, and dang, he is right.

    All My Shotguns

Dad has the plain jane Dickinson Estate in 16 guage and has been his primary gun for 10 years or so now and he really likes it. They're in the $1400-$1700 range now it looks like based on my quick check on gunbroker. I remember when Cabelas first started selling them and they were $900. Like...

    All My Shotguns

Like others have said, used. New CZs are supposed to be stout, but to me shoulder about like a 2x4 from Lowe’s. I bought all three of these well under $1000 in the last 5 years. 12 gauge Simson from 60s, 6# 11oz An unmarked German 16 from 1919 likely a Sauer action with killer wood (under...

    Semi Automatic 20 Gauge Recommendations

I think there is only one bubble you're bursting on here, several others on here that have actually used the Armsman made guns that like them just fine. Same gun my boy is holding in the above picture after a cattail push last year in South Dakota with a 40 mph head wind.

    Semi Automatic 20 Gauge Recommendations

I’ve got the TriStar stamped version. I’ve killed a pile of doves and used it for a day in South Dakota last year. I like it enough I’ll likely buy a 28 gauge to play with. If it were my only shotgun, would I have bought it? Probably not. I bought it as a curiosity to go with all my others. I...

4, 5, or 6 shot for you early season pheasant hunters? And what choke are you shooting?

5’s through modified choke are 95% of my shooting. Keeps it simple.

    More pheasants than ever before!!

After the second year in a row of me going pheasant hunting with a contractor buddy of mine from work on my wedding anniversary (Kansas one year, SD the next), wife said "I don't f'ing care where you go next year on our anniversary". Turns out, that was a lie, because evidently she didn't want...

A Story Retold: Bull Calf in a Swimming Pool

I've got a Kansas bull story myself. Brother in law and I shared a herd of cows and were leasing my grandpas pasture. Pasture had a rock quarry in part of it, 40 foot side walls on 3 sides of it with a good fishing hole in the bottom. We had just bought a brand new $$$$ Beefmaster bull...
