    Group hunting

Show up as a group of 4 or more where I hunt and you have just about zero chance of being allowed into private property, the best of which will have vastly more birds than any public land, WIA, WPA, etc. Come as two or fewer and you have a chance. I have done it in a group of six, and it was...

Memorable quotes to think about as the bird seasons approach

"The most important thing in the world is that you be able to shoot a shotgun well." That is what I told my kids the whole time they were growing up, only half in jest. Never heard anyone else say anything so silly. :) Now I would double down on it, but would add . . . "and have good places...

    Fall speculation

One thing about SD, the weather can get "interesting" at any time! This was Monday near Chamberlain.

    Fall speculation

I'd chase chukars. Roosters in SD are too easy. ;)

Grass Awn's - DEADLY for your dog

Another plant threat -- last season in SD I noticed my shorthair picking something off his lower hind leg. Next instant he's struggling to swallow whatever it was. Pryed his mouth open and it was a pp-cactus bud about an inch long, thorns sticking out everywhere, nearly down his throat. I...

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

This topic has been discussed a few times in past years on various sites. Apparently no one can come up with an ad for a 250-round "case" dated before 1981, and that was only one mfgr. Doesn't really matter. At some point back there it seems every "case" had 500 rounds in it. Then it got...

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

Not always. Years ago cases had 20 boxes in them. You could buy a single box, or a case of 20. Mostly out of concern for the backs of people who had to handle them, some mfgrs started putting out 10-box "cases." Having some cases holding 20 and some 10, we began to call the smaller ones...

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

I just ordered a flat from Rogers Sporting Goods. Hated to pay $200 when just a few years ago they were $100, but they are $250 now a lot of places. At least I got free shipping, and if I can bag one bird per shell fired it won't hurt too much. :)

    20 ga Feather lightning

An alum alloy is fine unless you have an accident where lateral pressure is applied against the action of the closed gun. Then you see why nearly all of them are made out of steel. Steel can fail, too, but it is much less likely to.

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

Danners and Meindls for pheasant hunting by old guys? Do we need to check ID's here? Danner Pronghorns were the only boots I ever had that I praying they would hurry up and wear out.

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

It all depends on what you need. The Keens I pictured weigh 7 oz per boot less than the Safaris. At my age and the distances I typically walk while hunting, that is a huge difference. I will not hunt in mountains (rocks) w/o a pair of Kenetrek's, but their stiff sole is uncomfortable walking...

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

I have several pr of Kenetreks and have not seen a model that did not have the waterproof liner (which works very welll, BTW!). They are a great boot but weigh too much for me on most days. In rough country or in snow, I will prolly have Kenetreks on, but not on dry days on the prairie. Last...

    CZ Sharp-tail 20 gauge

Could you post a photo or two of the crack? It may be simple to repair yourself.

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

Totally depends on the terrain and temperature but if I'm hunting fez on the flatlands with no snow I want something like these Keens -- good traction (while still being VERY lightweight), great comfort (esp. in the bottom/sole), waterproof and not hot (so not tall), and did I mention...

How many of you let birds go?

I prolly wd shoot a small one if it went up alone, but if two or more go up and one is bigger, that is the one I will shoot, range and safety permitting. I can bring only 15 frozen roosters home so I'd rather bring 15 big ones. There can be a lot of difference in weight, though sometimes a big...

28th Annual Trip To South Dakota

I was in the Platte/Parkston area a couple of weeks ago visiting relatives -- very green and lush. Should be a good year for birds!

If you like pheasants never let a coyote walk (or run) away. :)

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

If the weather isn't decent I wait a day or two, as it usually improves. If I have to wait longer, that's okay. I can bring back only 15 roosters and 15 grouse anyway.

    Hunting solo tactics

You gotta get your GF to walk along the other side of the fence, so they don't run out that side and take off low. :)
