Hunt tests or field trials are not the same as actual hunting, especially wild birds, IMO. Dogs can do well with one or the other or both.

HRC has an upland title / testing for flushing dogs. And if you have a lab that points there is the APLA.

Wyoming game and fish puts on a nice upland program at springer wildlife area. Great for young dogs and a nice warmup for the season too!

I’d recommend getting them out on planted birds early and often. Chukar have worked the best for me over the years. Starting at 3ish months old. The other important thing is what Julie Bates calls “the walk”. Getting the pup out with you in the field (just the two of you) and walking around...

I think blaze orange on the vest and cap is fine unless there’s some other requirement for more blaze orange than that, where you hunt.

Deer skin gloves work very well. Wearing them all the time allows me to become use to them. Plus I don’t have to worry about sharp objects or scraping my hand when I fall down.

Bigger dogs would have no problem with waterfowl hunting. Upland is a different story. It’s generally more like a marathon. I can’t recall ever seeing a large marathon runner.

The dog looks very healthy and also to be enjoying the upland! The cover where you hunted looks awesome too! I shudder to think what a dog that’s gone through 2 years of pro training would cost! Hopefully they enjoy many years of hunting together!

The chief shell pouch works well. It’s magnetic and I’ve read that it can interfere with electronics. So I have a separate pouch for that stuff.

Wouldn’t a pen raised bird have a flared nare or clipped toe? I wouldn’t doubt that a uniquely colored bird started out in a pen somewhere…but once it gets out and reproduces, a new color variant is introduced. And, wouldn’t any subsequent offspring be considered “wild”?

I plugged an over / under once when I fell in the snow. Right out of the car, barrel was warmish and snow froze in the end of both barrels. Thankfully I checked and discovered the problem. Found a stick to clean them out.

I don’t think that there’s any time saved in walking around with your gun off safe. Typically I’ll flip the safety off while I’m mounting the gun, so no time lost for me.
