I'm not trying to be a jerk with this question. Aren't coyotes, foxes, and other predators hunting them all night, every night? If so, how would some scattered humans and hunting dogs pose a greater risk to their reserves?

I'm seeing below 70. 65 to 67ish. And about 46 at 9 am on Saturday where we'll be. This is Google weather, so may be different than some other sources.

I'd like them to jump to Feb 10th as a dare to SD.

How far do you let your dogs go?

Honey is a cross between an English setter and a german wirehaired pointer. She knows best and I usually let her do whatever she feels she should be doing. Sometimes, if the birds are jumpy, I will try to keep her a little closer. She generally stays within 50 yards or so, but if she gets on...

    Shooting style

Agreed, but it doesn't hurt to mount it periodically while hunting. And if you have a pointer on a bird, a quick test mount can also be beneficial.

Good to cool off in the grouse woods.

Honey, cooling off in the Wisconsin grouse woods.

Some geese. No pheasant (unless you want to drive a suburban to a preserve). Lots of ruffed grouse. Lots of wolves.

    Grouse report

The only other thing I can add is to bring plenty of water and rest periodically. We did have some streams and puddles that were fine, but there were also some scummy ponds I made sure to keep her away from.

    Grouse report

I did some casual hunting a little east of that area this past week and and a few weekends before that. Leaves are still plenty leafy, as is ground cover. I didn't see a single tick. Biting flies were out in some areas this past weekend. Didn't encounter mosquitoes. Lower temps would be...

There is something similar between a trout experience like that and finding a big old rooster hiding in a small piece of cover.

Hard to get shots with her looking in the right direction. She's always looking and listening for other animals.

That's a strong grasshopper. Well trained too.

It does. But the males are brown, smaller, and faster. They look like this: Shot somewhere south of Duluth yesterday. Near some trees.

We think of the 1st month of small game season as getting in shape for pheasant hunting, because cover makes it darn hard to connect with a bird where we hunt. But even a blind squirrel gets a nut now and then.

Honey prefers colorful birds, but isn't against a woodland bird when her human somehow manages to connect with one.

The info I read said it was up more than that in the SE region. I thought that was your neck of the woods? Asking, because I'm wondering if there is conflicting information out there.

I'm optimistic too. Statewide dnr survey numbers are up almost 50% over last year. Most of that was in the SE, but SW showed a good jump too. All 6 regions showed at least a double digit percentage increase, with the SE region showing a triple digit increase. Can't ask for much more than...
