    RATTLER!!

Got hit on the leg while rabbit hunting in south Georgia a few years back on a warm day. Luckily I was wearing chaps. We encountered several more in the next few minutes so we shut it down. Turkey hunting in Texas years ago I encountered a monster diamond back but he got dead too.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Oh we hunt with dogs but it would be hunting even without - to me anyway.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Understood. I deer, turkey, and coyote hunt solo - as to be expected. I quail hunted many years solo or with one other person. The pheasant hunts we've been doing for 26 seasons has been 7 to 8 people that all grew up together here in Georgia, plus a couple of SD locals. For us it's more about...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

Well, IMO it is hunting but thanks for playing. I guess if sitting in a deer stand, duck or goose blind is considered "hunting" then 10 people walking a corn field can be.

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

If you have video proof of killing both birds then he owes the pot for the number of shots he missed - including the bird he hit after it was dead. In this case the most fun would be five or more of my buddies, after a glass or two of whiskey, yelling over each other trying to figure it out who...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

$1/miss and if you and your buddy cannot figure out who killed the bird you both shot at, you both pay a dollar. If you shoot three times at a rooster and hit it the third shot, you owe $2. It sounds a little much but it works out and we are close enough friends that we will call each other out...

    More rain! Widespread!

My farmers have always told me that early summer hoppers are essential for optimal chick survival rate.

    Bound for South Dakota

    I won't be far from you. I'm 20 miles east on 44.

    More rain! Widespread!

Got close to 2" near Platte this past weekend too.

You never know what a season will bring

Yes, our farmers are almost exclusively no-till. They rotate corn and beans every year on their fields.

1.5 inches of rain last night on the farms we hunt near Platte - good times!

One of my farmers texted this morning and says good corn (for them) is pretty much guaranteed now. Any more rain is gravy and there is more predicted tonight and tomorrow. Get the corn matured and out of the fields, except for strips of course. Glad for the farmers and us hunters.

You never know what a season will bring

There's so much more to it than what I mentioned when it comes to bird numbers but it starts with habitat for the sake of the birds and hunting those birds.

You never know what a season will bring

My buddies and I have been going to SE South Dakota for the last 26 years. Have not missed a pheasant opener since 1997. There are six to eight private farms we have access to and have become very close friends with the owners and the community in general. We have hunted weather ranging from...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

My bunch has been together for over 25 years and we still have guys that: 1. lane violate when shooting birds. If the bird is 20 corn rows over - don't shoot. Let that guy or a blocker closer to the bird shoot. 2. are permanent edge walkers (PEWs). Get in the slough or the corn sometimes instead...

    More pheasants than ever before!!

Great news! Drive to New Holland 3 or 4 times and give me a report! LOL

    Hen! Hen! Rooster!

This will be my group of 8 hunters' 26th straight season in South Dakota. We are from Georgia and we have gotten pretty good with our tactics and non-verbal communication. We all know what to do and when to do it to maximize fun and safety. We have a blast every year - birds or no birds.

    Hen! Hen! Rooster!

Lane violations drive me nuts. The bird gets up in front of me and a hunter (buddy) way down the line shoots it or shoots at it. Just sayin

If you could only pick one week...

We're in the New Holland, Platte, Corsica area and the birds had been tough to come by until 2020. Last two years has been really good. Not 1999-2008 good but much better than 2015-2019.

If you could only pick one week...

2nd week of season. That's usually (emphasize usually), on our 6 farms, time enough to have corn out. Nobody hunts those farms opening week so we have bunched up, un-spooked birds. And normally the weather is still good although 2020 we hunted in snow all week.
