Looks like NRCS is going to have some major cuts.

I am glad our CRP is not coming out in the next 4 years, but a lot of the current ground in the program will be, this will likely be the end for much wildlife habitat in the state. We dont have tons of CRP in Iowa, but what we have, is what holds the majority of the birds.

    Seeded some EQUIP ground today.

Looks great, the tool with a cultipacker is just the tool you need! That leaves an awesome looking finish. Now a soaking rain would be nice. I was using a rear spreader similar to that today, but I was spreading corn for the birds....they are completely destroying my food plots. I thought...

    Looking for locals to guide?

Oh, I wouldn't be guiding anyone. It would be exchanging some currency for you to follow my dog around our CRP and shoot pheasants until you each had 3! And I will be shooting my 3 also.

    Looking for locals to guide?

Keep in touch as that gets close, maybe we can work something out. I hate to see you make a journey like that and not see a pile of birds for your efforts.

    Looking for locals to guide?

Opening weekend, that is a tough ask. 4 guys and you only shoot 1 or 2 birds....I am afraid you would not have enough shells to go for 2 or 3 hours with me. I hope you mean, per guy, each day...if not, you need to shoot much better or find better ground. Coming from Canada, you need to find...

Food plot prep work is beginning

Thanks, The pic looks promising. I see a quart is $115, enough for 200 pounds of seed corn. I called the company to see if this could work on sorghum seed also.

Food plot prep work is beginning

I emailed PF last year and one of their biologists called me back, the fella has heard about this happening but didn't have an answer. I threw out the idea of spreading shelled corn out, he didn't like that idea. I might try it as a last resort. I can try spreading the corn in the hedges...

Where Have All the Birds Gone?

Number of pheasants looks crazy good here....NW Iowa. Not sure what you are referring to.

Food plot prep work is beginning

No decoys. Planted the remain sweet corn in the planter and loaded-up sorghum, replanted the plots, got that done around 9:00. Before I finished, I realized I had lost my hat. Got back to the farm, planted a couple more packets of pumpkins and gourds, got the gator and headed back over to...

Food plot prep work is beginning

Well, in my food plots the corn was up and the sorghum is sprouting, but not up. The birds have dug-up 99% of the corn it seems. I had planted with a 6 row, with 2 rows of corn, 2 passes, to have 4 rows of corn with 4 rows of sorghum on the outsides. Had this idea of a perfect food plots, but...

Reeds Canary Grass to Switchgrass Project

That looks great! I am always afraid of the spring spraying into a stand of desirable grass. It looks like you really did a number on the the canary.

    Rain Dance

Sunday I was visting with the friend/local farmer and when I left, I asked his daughter to do a rain-dance for us....maybe she did. Sunday night we received just under an inch and last night 1.1". I think we are a couple weeks from the hatch here. We really needed these rains, it was so dry...

    CRP species mix question

The thing I would change, if I were to redo the seeding, would be to see it they could replace or leave-out, the wildrye grasses. I didn't know that the "mean seeds" were such potential hazards to dogs.

Food plot prep work is beginning

Checked the rain gauge before leaving for work...almost a solid INCH! That will get the herbicide activated and the seed growing. Now if the birds don't dig it up, we will have winter feed for them.

CRP Contract Length, 10 or 15 years?

We did 15, no guarantee they will even offer these conservation programs in the future. Inflation and the payment rates might not have much to do with each other. Get it in and enjoy it. People, even sportsman, get hung up on the money. Place a price on the enjoyment you will get from that...
