    Most Satisfying Shot

I think in those situations when you are physically about spent, your concentration becomes more acute. It is a huge rush of relief mixed with a good amount of satisfaction folding a rooster with a tough shot in those conditions. Been there before also.

    How fast conditions change.

Finished spraying the plots today. Took a pic of the plot I left yesterday, if you zoom-in, the left side you can see the velvet leaves, but on the right side (where I sprayed yesterday), they are all rolled and wilted. In this plot, there were a lot of places with no sorghum. I will feed...

    How fast conditions change.

I sprayed about 4 acres of food plot this afternoon, saw one chick and he was small, but got airborne! Hope to spray the remaining tomorrow, winds, should be much calmer.

    How fast conditions change.

We had been very short on moisture in my pocket, but the last 3 weeks or so has changed this. Getting dumped on during the hatch, but I am guessing we will be just fine. On a positive note, the 3rd planting in the food plots is growing fast. Just need to get them sprayed, will try to do that...

For sale prime south dakota hunting land and cabin

That could be on the market for a while. I scanned the description, it mentioned "white oaks". This property is within 80 miles of me, I have never seen a native white oak here, everything is burr oaks, but maybe??? This is right outside Sioux Falls (a lot of businesses home base there), so...

For sale prime south dakota hunting land and cabin

That is a lot of coin for something with very limited income potential. Hardly big enough to get several guys to share it. As Weim says "seriously wealthy" as the ROI is the satisfaction you get from being there.....on your short quarter. Even a seriously wealthy guy is doubtful unless it is...

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

I think these food plots are the reason for the number of birds we have. Without the food plots, the winter food would be an issue...well, it kind of is already, even with food plots, I just need to make them more productive and harvest more roosters.

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

Next spring I will give things a early shot of round-up. I have the grasses encroaching and several patches of Canadian thistle through out. Also will try the Avipel, it will be cheaper and easy to buy and apply that, than planting 3 times and then feeding a couple hundred gallons of shelled corn.

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

Well, the plots might have a chance. I replanted all of them in our CRP twice and the the ones closest to the switchgrass 3 times. Got 2 inches of rain around Father's Day and should have received another shot today. Now I need a windows where I can spray 24D. I started spreading shelled...

For sale prime south dakota hunting land and cabin

$5,850/acre, included a cabin. That seems more than steep, I hope that "cabin" is a nice home. Chad, I hope this isn't yours or something you are trying to sell. I seriously assumed that rough (non-tillable) ground in SD MIGHT be a couple thousand an acre now.

    Pollinator Mix Going In

I think we mowed 3 times the first year and once the second, but ours wasn't a pollinator mix. You know, those seeds was harvested the prior year and were likely stored in outside (non-climate controlled) storage. There will be new seeds germinating for the first few years. A fun project!

How many of you let birds go?

If it is pheasant season and there are some extremely late hatched "roosters", they will have a harder time surviving the coming winter than those older (bigger/stronger) birds. I will generally harvest or attempt to harvest, the first 3 roosters I can.

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

If things keep happening over there, I hope you have similar issues in a few years!

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

Seed corn, maybe they smell the seed treatment, as I have seen where they dig seed out right after planting and I see where they dig the plant up, eat the seed and leave the plant laying there. The only thing I am certain of, is that a record number of roosters will be harvested from this farm...

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

Reach-out this fall, I am not far from Sioux City, it might be a further drive than you want for a limit of roosters.

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

I have about 6 acres on that farm, I only did the 3rd replant on about 3 acres. I had an old boy in the nursing home tell me that back in the 30s, the county gave the farmers shotgun shells to shoot the pheasants as they were so thick they would dig up the corn seed....kind of what I am...

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

I saw chicks yesterday and today in different places. My food plots are a disaster as the birds are eating the the seeds from the ground, corn and sorghum. I replanted for the last time today. A week ago I started spreading shelled corn inside a hedgerow about a quarter mile long that is...
