    It Looks Grim

Humans have short memories. One thing I've thought about is with 2011 and 2012 Kansas pheasant population was entering that drought coming off of very good numbers and have never returned. That is not the case this time around.

    2022 Forecast Is Out

Down here north of Tulsa we had well over an inch around 9/1. Not a drop since. Can’t even tell we got that now. Humidity is around 18 percent most afternoons. It does feel nice out now. I do think we had a fair bobwhite hatch down here considering the conditions.

    2022 Forecast Is Out

One of these days I'm going to step into one of those pockets of birds and kill a limit all in one rise.

    It Looks Grim

It isn’t good any way you look at it. I’ll take 2005 again. https://eupdate.agronomy.ksu.edu/article_new/how-hot-has-it-been-in-kansas-this-summer-506

    It Looks Grim

That’s not what I was referring to. I was referring to extreme drought conditions and everything dried up. There hasn’t been ample CRP for several years. Even the corners we hunt that were left alone didn’t look very thick.

    It Looks Grim

Drove the back roads through Kiowa, Edwards, and Pratt Counties over the last two days. Killed a few doves. Did not see a pheasant and I was out and about at dawn and dusk. Saw two fresh sets of tracks (pheasant) near a puddle I was sitting on. Few areas of decent habitat-mostly corners that...

    Doves

I remember driving out west a few years ago and thinking man we are wasting our time. Once we got west of Pratt they were thick. Didn’t see many until about that point. Man we had a blast. Hope everyone has a good time this weekend. I’ll be hunting a small spot here tomorrow and Friday and...

Upland bird population will never fully rebound.

I’ve killed a few roosters around Kaw lake over the years while quail hunting. Don’t see as many as I used to but back when the turkey hunting was great there, you’d hear them crowing all morning long.… early 2000s.

Upland bird population will never fully rebound.

Yep. just to keep a shred of optimism with everyone, I thought my quail hunting days were over after 2012. Following the great drought our bobwhites rebounded and we had some phenomenal hunting in 2013 through about 2016 or so…

Upland bird population will never fully rebound.

I only Make that trip now cause we have some private corners to hunt. Kill a few every year. I’d never drive up there just for WIHA…and my drive is only 4.5 hours. It’s been a very long time since it was really good. Heading up next weekend to dove hunt. We will see if the corners have been...

    Doves

Anyone have any bird number reports with dove season approaching? Edwards/Pawnee area? Know its been a hot and dry summer up there like it has been down here but they tend to do a little better in drought summers. Thanks in advance!

When do we start the push for change?

Think about it for a second…. I started to call and report a WIHA that had been scalped back in November. If I’ve seen it, then hasn’t a warden or some other kdwp employee seen it as well?!? If not then my BS meter goes off…

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

I was watching an old home movie from our trip in 2004. Four of us killed almost 40 birds opening weekend. We quit hunting after one field on that Monday morning. All in Pawnee and Edwards Co and all on WIHA. Fast forward to present day.... hunting all private corners. Since 2018, we kill...

    Heading to Kansas

IMO Lewis are the way to go. Used them a lot out in Western Oklahoma. Regarding Lewis boots, bring a roll of high quality duct tape. Go to gundog supply or search their videos on youtube on how to properly put them on. Otherwise, you may lose one or have to fix a sagging boot during a hunt...

    Heading to Kansas

I threw mine in the box for the opener. I have never used them in central kansas. Sand burs seemed spotty and only got into them in a few places. I did not use them this year. I'm sure that I would have needed them just a little further west. I'm sure it all depends on the location. If you...
