I've had ammo go bad on me. Turkey loads. It costed me a nice tom too. It was Winchester Longboard XR that was about 10 years old.
I won't be using shells that are more than a few years old anymore now.

Regardless. I use Federal Premium lead in #6 shot. Either Prairie Storm or Wing Shok that's 1500 fps. I use an IC choke all season, all my shots are 30 yards or less.
Jim, bear in mind that there is a 4 day youth/early anterless firearms deer season from October 16-19 so there may be some people hunting deer during those four days with firearms. You will need additional blaze orange during those 4 days when you are hunting.

I agree with Gladhunter above; the stop and go method works pretty well without a dog. I hunted without a dog for years before I was able to own one. Take 10 steps, pause, 10 more steps, pause. Birds will flush when you are standing still.
