    All My Shotguns

I simply like guns. Finally had to get a second safe. Rifles in one. Shotguns in another. Both are over full with extras in corners and other rooms. Need to buy 2 more safes. I try to do the 1+ gun a year game. Sometimes I win. Sometimes I lose. Sometimes I really really win.

    Pheasant update

My wife never told me she had a sister, but it sure sounds like she does. I'm in the same boat, the money is not the issue to going on an out of state hunt. It is purely about the available time to get away.

Man, now I really want to get a 20 ordered. Double triggers. 30”. Extractors. Taratuga Gold level finishes. Think my wife would notice the deposit missing from the checking account? Share pics and thoughts after you get yours.

I just hate the look of that skip line basketweave laser cut abomination. I could live with it, but for a few hundred you can have somebody do a traditional cut checkering to fix it up right proper like.

Several other forums have reviews on them and all are pretty positive. I hate the checkering, but that can be fixed with some of the wife's money...

    Single shot guns?

Not shotguns, but I hunt with a pair of single shot Winchester 1885 rifles for coyotes and big game.

    Low Turkey Numbers

And for giggles, 2006 Arkansas was around 20k birds, last year was 8k. So for the 3 states I’m close to we are seeing half the harvest we had 15 years earlier. Population has dropped like a rock.

How do you store your frozen game and fish

For deer/elk/antelope roasts (I never cut a steak until I'm ready to cook), it is plastic wrap and then freezer paper. Burger goes in the premade burger bags with the tape dispensor you press them in. Fish and pheasant parts typically go in ziplock bags and water to displace the air. Jerky...

    Low Turkey Numbers

Not disagreeing at all, because your hypothesis coukd very well be one of the 1000 cuts decimating the turkey population. But….Missouri doesn’t allow baiting of deer/turkey. Arkansas generally is same way (except deer in special circumstances). Numbers still aren’t what they were 15-20 years ago.

    Low Turkey Numbers

Anecdotally bird numbers are way down in SEKS and SWMO. Driving 65 miles if backroads I’d used to see birds every few miles. And lots of them. It just isn’t that way. Seems like 2000-2010 or so were the golden age around here. There are definitely still birds. Just not the huge numbers anymore...

    Corner crossings

The multiple MeatEater podcasts covering this are quite enlightening. In Wyoming, where the case being tried is, there was nothing on the books about corner crossing, but as somebody else mentioned, it was frowned upon by the game warden and sheriffs deputies just to avoid conflict. The...

    Here we go again...

Saw a TikTok video yesterday of a farmer out by Rush Center. Had a center pivot with the corners planted to wheat. The only wheat that was up was right at the edge of the corn stubble where the center pivot had some overspray when he was still irrigating his corn late last summer. The rest of...

    Morels

A friends brother found 41 yesterday between Joplin and Springfield. Have seen lots of pictures last few days of them all over southern Missouri. We are soaking wet though. Dad is 90 miles west and says he hasn’t had a good rain since Christmas.

    Vehicles

Are you talking about all those Silverado’s made in central Mexico being the American ones? I’ve driven by the plant. 100s of acres of new 1500s staged for loading on the trains to come back to the US. Gotta love that $4/hour labor rate there. My Tundra was made in San Antonio. But it’s...

Tough clothes for guys tough on clothes!!!

Best kept secret in the outdoors pants market (for a non briar proof, but that is what I have chaps for). I have multiple pairs of the Wangler ATG's, as well as the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro pants (coupon codes and sales can put them in the $40 range). Stretch with movement, lightweight, dry...

    What else do you hunt?

My passion is ‘bird’ hunting. Birds being quail and pheasants. Doves to kick off the season. Waterfowl because we don’t have quail anymore. Love to hear gobblers at daybreak. I deer hunt because I feel the need to use my deer rifles and love making jerky, sausage, and pastrami...
