    Loosing birds

A larger bore simply does it better. Modern ammo has definitely blurred the lines between the gauges. You can find all kinds of overstuffed shotshells in subgauges now. If you take an ounce of lead it'll pattern better out of a 12 than a 20 if you control all the variables. Will this really make...

What produces recoil? Velocity or payload?

I think someone earlier in this thread was just "shooting from the hip." But at least I know Hornady includes the weight of the wad in the payload. As they only produce buckshot and slugs in the shotgun dept. this info comes in really handy for bird hunting.

Yeah I was wondering how insurance works on a deal like that. And if they try to find cause of death, i.e. a disease that could spread in the herd. I'll ask relatives about it who have cattle, but probably won't see them for a few months.

Spot on captain obvious. We took no shots near cattle on our hunt.

What produces recoil? Velocity or payload?

Recoil doesn't "bother" me when hunting, as in it's not painful. I remember turkey hunting with an inertia gun and having to twist around a bit because of course the turkey came in from a direction I had not anticipated. I was in a weird crouch position and had to let a few rounds go before I...

South - Southeast SD bird numbers?

Send goose a PM if you want Molly to get good practice on catching running cripples. I'm sure the spots he walked have plenty. 💩

We hunted the same spots two days in a row. I normally never do that but it was worth it. So Friday we saw all the cows on the back of a hillside out of the wind. We went there the next day and there was a dead one. My buddy is Mr. Johnny on the spot so he jumped the fence to investigate. The...

    Loosing birds

I don't think I lost a single bird this year when hunting alone with Skye*. I know on one hunt with with 4 guys and 5 dogs we lost some. When you have a big grab-assy type group things seem more chaotic and it's easier to lose one. *I'll double check in the hunting journal when time allows.

If your dog is from Wyoming buy some rabbit loads.

    Loosing birds

    1. Put the 28 in the safe and leave it there all bird season. 2. Shoot a healthy payload but avoid high velocity in anything except a gas gun 3. Work with Mr. Jones. Even in the off season walk him in the prairie when within the law. Also, make sure he sees every episode of jcw outdoors. 4...

South - Southeast SD bird numbers?

Well that clears it up completely. Sometimes I think your motto in life is, "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit."

    Loosing birds

Goose, I'm sorry to say it, you got bamboozled. Don't kill the messenger, but that lady in Saskatchewan pulled your chain. She sold you a lab from Laramie. Now we know why the birds get away, you've got a dog from Wyoming🤯!

    Habitat, Crops Cover for Pheasants.

Look for undisturbed grasslands. Bluestem, Indian grass and switchgrass are good. Brome is the least desirable, but still used when nothing else is available.

    Future of CRP ?

My understanding is that pheasants forever can only own land in a trust. So if a parcel is bought, often by multiple groups i.e. PF, DU, local Sportsman's clubs, private individuals, they all pool money together, buy the parcel, PF holds it in trust for a limited time (seems 3-5 yrs is common)...

    Loosing birds

Go to the pay ranches. Thinner cover and the birds die easy.

What produces recoil? Velocity or payload?

Shoot 1 1/4 ounce lead or bismuth at around 1330fps and you'll be good.
