    Annual Late Season Hunt

That's interesting, the birds that do the death climb and then plummet are usually stone-dead when you get to them. Glad to hear that you flushed good numbers of hens!

    New A5 Sweet Sixteen reviews

I've had mine since '17, and I couldn't be happier. I've got the 26" barrel and I got real lucky with the wood, it's real nice. Just a joy to carry all day.

    Thanksgiving Hunt

Nice report, sounds like a real good trip other than the bad news about your brother. Sorry to hear that. I'm with you on the morning routine. I like to eat breakfast fairly early and then spend a couple of hours driving around scouting.

    Cabelas Mitchell SD

I was in the Mitchell Cabela's two days ago. Nowhere near as much ammo as the opening week, which was 3 weeks ago now. All the pallets were gone. What they had fit on one short aisle, and a couple of endcaps. I didn't pay much attention because I didn't need any ammo, just kinda strolled through...

It was time for a 20 gauge auto

Exactly. I love Remingtons, I've shot 870's and 1100's my whole life. But 4 years ago I got one of the new Sweet 16's, it weighs 5 lbs 14 oz and was a game-changer for me. Can't imagine going back to carrying heavy guns around.

It was time for a 20 gauge auto

Good choice, I'm sure your dad will enjoy that 20. My wife has two 20ga Vipers and really likes them both.

    SD Resident Opener Reports?

Ammo update for anyone coming to the Mitchell area, or maybe passing through here on their way elsewhere- Cabela's now has a huge assortment of pheasant shells in stock. Numerous pallets of 4's, 5's, 6's.....Federal, Win, Rem, Kent. Mostly 12ga, but a fair amount of 16, 20, and 28ga too. I...

    Cheap lead shells

I dropped by there on my way to ND about 10 days ago. They had 16ga and 28ga prairie storm for $30-35 per box. A small amount of 12ga 1 & 1/8oz target loads. Didn't notice if they had steel shot. The Walmart had a pretty good amount of 12ga lead pheasant loads. Prairie Storm 4's for $23 I...

    quail opener

My wife and I hunted on public land, I think it was BLM. I use the OnX app on my phone, and it's pretty easy to see where the public land is. There are lots of dirt/gravel roads criss-crossing the public parcels, due to all the oilfield activity. Most of the roads are extremely rough, but 4wd...

    quail opener

I hunted one day last season in the SW panhandle, and it was bleak. Dry as a bone, very thin cover. We hunted a little over half a day and saw one covey of about 10 birds. In an average year, we would've seen 5 coveys of 25 birds or so on the same walks that we made that day. There's been a...

    First trip/Advice

Pick an area with a good amount of CREP spots. (brown in the hunting atlas) Most CREP spots have very good crp grass cover, and there's usually corn or soybeans bordering the property, or right across the road.

    Remington 1100 16 gauge

I have one, an early-70's model. 26" plain barrel, IC choke. I bought an extra barrel off gunbroker, 28" mod choke. It's not lightweight by any means, but not real heavy either. I've got a 12ga 1100 from the same era, and the 16 is noticeably lighter than the 12, even though they're built on...

    North Central Kansas Advice

There are definitely some around in the part of KS that's closed to hunting chickens. A couple of weeks ago I watched a flock of 37 fly from milo stubble into CRP, about 30 min before sunset. Was a very cool thing to see.

LOOKING FOR 16 GAUGE AMMO IN NORTHERN IL

A quick check on brickseek.com shows the walmarts in Waukegan and Gurnee, IL to have the Federal Game Loads in stock. Those are 1oz of 6's, at 1165 fps. Price is $8.58 per box. Not the best load out there for phez, especially late-season, but better than nothing. I've had the new Sweet 16 for...
