Man it’s tough to get enough acres and compete with the deer hunters. Anyone advertising a quail only lease knows what they got. Scratch a big check or get in on a deer lease with guys on the quail side after they tag out.. I live in Texas and do 80% out of state because of the money

Foot hunter on 80% quail in Texas nm and Oklahoma, yearly trips to sd or montana… the other 20 are obviously pheasant and some dusky grouse early season. 8o% public throughout the year on big marginal land, 7-10 miles a day

Thursday was possibly my last hunt and it was bittersweet, it has been quite a year. 44 days in the field in 6 states, first bird of the year a dusky grouse, last a blue quail… it goes so fast guys don’t blink!

How does your big running dog handle warm temps, 50 degrees?

I’m trying to gather as much info on setters this year before I make a decision. Looking for a line or kennel that raises dogs for big country, have endurance, will live and hunt in a warmer environment for the most part. Any input is welcome, from what I’ve been around setters I like there...

I agree with dude, and remember Mother Nature takes more than we do. This year I’ve seen more hawk kills and attempts than ever before, and they hunt every day. When the covey is single digits I try to leave them alone!

I’m currently looking at setters and it’s more complicated in lines than I thought. From close working grouse dogs to thoroughbred dogs out west. My advice is get a setter because you want one and not out of convenience. Have you hunted behind the female?

They move a bit from cover to food, my advice drive out west to one of your wma properties and point your dog into the wind. There are enough birds this year if you pick a place with weeds grass and overhead cover, look for tracks and old roosts you can find some birds. If you strike out it...
