Drop that dog and go for it, your 30 days out with an 11 month old so it is what it is. Do it for fun and learning

Life if you stay on schedule, I did this wrong for years with my old vet thinking they were covered. He sees dogs bitten weekly here, I’m just passing on what he has told me

I think the more important thing to find out is what vets carry anti venom in your hunting area… if it happens drive past the ones who don’t keep it in stock

At the vet, one primary shot then boosted quarterly, not overly expensive. I’m in snake country and my vet says lots of places do the yearly without the boosters and it’s a waste of time and money if not boosted properly. I’ve seen dogs bit with and without it, they all lived.

    What’s the best food?

I like pro plan and a couple years ago when supply chains went crazy it could still be found. I agree above start on a quaility food and don’t switch unless something major pops up.

what areas do you look for on the map when deciding to hunt upland birds

I’m making g my first trip to sd in 34 days, I’ve looked at so many maps and marked pins I feel like I grew up there. Some really good hunting vids on YouTube that show terrain, vegetation… and if they want to keep showing clues to there location in the background fine by me!

Do you carry a dog first aid kit while hunting and if so what should be in one

Don’t change the food before a trip, or at all in my opinion in the hunting season… diarrhea means dehydration. Dogs that ride in a kennel regularly will have no problem with the trip. Wire cutters, tape, gauze, and needle nose quill pullers is all I carry, good kit it the vehicle.

RE: How do you get your dogs in shape, does walking behind a truck or 4 wheeler cause problems?

I’m making a better effort this summer to get the dogs swimming 2-3 days a week. Until it cools off in the evenings it’s about all I got.

    Pointers in Cold Country

I’m ready to see all the reply’s, my situation is yours in reverse dog wise. I own a pudelpointer and have been around 10-15 others, I like them a lot. The weather swings will not be an issue and you still get a dog to bust in a half frozen duck pond. Range is above average but not English...
