    2023 Resident Opener

I'd like to think anyone on this site would keep driving when there's another vehicle in the lot, but some people act like pheasants are bars of gold. In Wisconsin people will often pull into the same lot that I've sat in all morning waiting for it to get light and then get out and hunt. I...

Kuiu brush or orvis tough shells

I had the Orvis ToughShell Pants for a couple seasons and put many many miles on in them.. They started to become less and less waterproof so I finally called Orvis Customer Service. After 2 seasons of heavy usage they allowed me to return my pants for a full refund and put the money towards a...

    Hotels in Huron

I've never had an issue at the Dakota Inn.. They seem to be the most reasonable price-wise (though their prices seems to go up each year) and it isn't so nice that I feel bad about having my dogs in the room with me. I wish the Wi-Fi was a little better.. They used to have a flat rate for having...

    Huron, SD

Reports are that there will be zero birds within 50 miles of Huron this fall, that giant pheasant might be the only one you see! I would avoid the area (especially the first week in November and another week TBD in December). Also very little public land around.. and rattlesnakes, and lots of them.

    Birds Around Rugby?

I was wondering what the bird numbers (sharptails, huns, pheasants..) are like around Rugby.. My family typically goes there around the middle of October to duck hunt, and while I'd go along to duck hunt a day or two, I'd love to break away for a few days if I can get into some other birds. I'd...

    Shooting percentage

My most recent trip to SD I pulled the trigger 9 times and came home with 9 roosters. That'll never happen again in my life, and I'm absolutely sure I'll be cursed for quite some time for even posting about it. Prior to that I shot about 30 pheasants this year and I'd say I missed 5 or 6...

    2022/2023 PHEASANT Hunting Videos

Absolutely, I think it’s the only way to do it. It wasn’t too bad, definitely fell a couple times, but I think it was the better than plain old boots.

    2022/2023 PHEASANT Hunting Videos

Not to blow this thread up with my own videos, but here are my last two of the season. What a trip to SD.. 9/9 on roosters when the gun went off. Never missed. Probably will never have a repeat performance like it.

    2022/2023 PHEASANT Hunting Videos

I bought these on Amazon for $70. Worked pretty well.. small enough to navigate the cattails, but big enough to not fall through EVERY drift.

    2022/2023 PHEASANT Hunting Videos

Here’s the first of three videos from our recent SD trip. One video per day, and a limit each day.

    Snow hunting

Go to the thickest cover you can find, a nice cattail patch the last hour will usually be holding some birds, especially near a food source.

    January Report

The trip from Wisconsin was a rough one, but well worth it.. I’d say we put up over 100 birds on a WPA. Closed my action nice and light to not spook any birds, and that led me to pulling the trigger on two different roosters and the gun not going off… either way we ended up with a limit. Not...

    follow-up to huntable areas thread...

Not sure if you're still planning to go, but I'll be making a trip to either the Chamberlain or Aberdeen area this coming week. I'll shoot you a message or post the video on here of how it goes. I'm bringing snowshoes and hitting all the shelter belts and cattail patches I can. Should be a tough...

    follow-up to huntable areas thread...

I'm hoping to make a trip from Wisconsin next week. I've been messaging a ton of AirBNB hosts and asking about current conditions in their area. From what I've gathered, it seems like Chamberlain has the least amount of snow and Aberdeen also have less than most places. Regardless it seems like...

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

Is huntable or what? Based on this it feels like I should shoot for somewhere between Huron and Aberdeen next week. Before the last storm somewhere between Chamberlain and Mitchell seemed better.

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

Just low bird numbers? I’m from Wisconsin so a good number of my hunts are 5+ miles without jumping a single bird. If I could kick up 10 birds a day I’d be more than happy. I originally planned to aim for the Mitchell area before that last storm. But any time I talk about a trip that area gets...

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

Anyone have any info in regards to Aberdeen vs Huron on how “huntable” it currently is (or will be in a week).. I’m off in a week and I’m going somewhere.. I’ve hunted Huron enough to know the area pretty well and would rather go there if it’s even remotely doable, but I’ve heard Aberdeen is...

    Debating a Mid-January Kansas Trip…

I like the mindset, it’s either South East SD for whatever roosters made it through the storm, or wherever in Kansas gives me the best chance at a few shots at some kind of bird, I’m not too picky. I’m young and so are my dogs so putting a lot of miles on is not something I’m afraid of. I’ve got...

    Debating a Mid-January Kansas Trip…

I’ll have to pray SD has a place or two that’s huntable by mid January then.. my wife is out of the country for work and I either take a hunting trip or find someone to watch my dogs while I work.. and I don’t think there’s much question as to what the right option is. I’d really prefer to blast...
