Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

Wouldn’t a pen raised bird have a flared nare or clipped toe? I wouldn’t doubt that a uniquely colored bird started out in a pen somewhere…but once it gets out and reproduces, a new color variant is introduced. And, wouldn’t any subsequent offspring be considered “wild”?

    Hunting accident in Harvey County

I plugged an over / under once when I fell in the snow. Right out of the car, barrel was warmish and snow froze in the end of both barrels. Thankfully I checked and discovered the problem. Found a stick to clean them out.

    Hunting accident in Harvey County

I don’t think that there’s any time saved in walking around with your gun off safe. Typically I’ll flip the safety off while I’m mounting the gun, so no time lost for me.

    Hunting accident in Harvey County

Double guns may not be that safe either. Watched a video of a guy on a driven shoot with his lab at heal. The birds started to fly, he closed the receiver and the gun discharged into the ground right beside his dog. People really need to be mindful of where the barrel is pointed at all times...

    Hunting accident in Harvey County

Something similar happened upland hunting in eastern Colorado a couple years ago. Hunter put his loaded shotgun down in the vehicle and his dog stepped on it and it discharged into his stomach. The hunter passed away shortly afterwards.

    Yips

There are lots of reasons we miss. Fatigue, surprise, mental distraction and (my favorite) poor gun mount all come to mind. I’m not able to see the red patch around a pheasants eye, but the birds that I end up shooting at are generally flushed at a distance of more than 10 yards. I do...

A good season, not without its struggles

I think that my dog judges me, briefly, when I don’t shoot or when I miss. I get “the eye”. And shortly thereafter it’s all good! Thankfully! 😅

Dog not eating when on the road hunting

FortiFlora. Good for gut health too in the event they eat something they shouldn’t.

Blockers, what chokes are you using.

It looks like Carlson's makes choke tubes for prairie storm. Others probably do to. On the Wing podcast has a recent discussion with a rep from PS if you are interested in listening to it. I prefer Fiochi GP 5’s with IC and M choke tubes.

    Hunting solo tactics

I put the dog on the ground, remain quiet, and follow her around. And when I say quiet I really mean it-no talking to the pup at all. It usually works out well! Very enjoyable!

    Rain

I think the dirt roads out there become very tough to navigate when the become this wet.

    Uninsulated Boots??

I ended up getting a pair of uninsulated Russell’s. NOT inexpensive. Most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned, right out of the box. Pretty sure that the leather will last the rest of my lifetime, but, not so sure about the stitching.. we will see. I sure hope so! Working on keeping them from...

    2024/2025 Pheasant Hunting Videos

I think, as GH said, coughing, sneezing and or a lethargic dog. Plus any unusual pain which might signify an infection. Fever usually accompanied an infection too. I had a black lab who was 6 or so who developed a hard time getting up. Painful. Took him to the vet and they found an infection...

    2024 opener

Any report of blue green algae in the ponds? I’m sure it’s tempting to let the dog jump in to cool off but I believe that bg algae can be lethal.
