What the KDWP Blames It On

Yes, probably both. If nothing is getting done at the current rate, up the rate and accept that they will get few projects accomplished. Some is better than none. No point in just sitting on the money. As far as marketing, that’s squarely their job. Get after it. Maybe transfer some of the...

Unpopular opinion - dog caught a hen

There are north central SD reports of lots of Snows literally falling out of the sky due to avian flu. Many unable to takeoff with the rest of the flock when leaving a feed field or lake/pond. Dog in our group found a dead one on the edge of a slough. No indication of being shot. Just one more...

    Nebraska not worth the trip

As we are all aware, there's a lot of variables in producing plentiful wild pheasant, the weather being a key one. I had hopes that Nebraska's Berggren plan would work well and be an example that other states <cough> Kansas </cough> could follow. I know the drought hurt and a lot of CRP has...

What is Perfect Point of Impact??

What is Perfect Point of Impact??

My apologies, I should have added my thoughts on lead to that Garmin post. AFTER I know where the center of my pattern is going considering the way I mount my gun, I'm a head/front half shooter. Ideally, I want the center of the pattern just ahead of the beak on crossers. Going away, I'd like...

What is Perfect Point of Impact??

Something that helped me shim my Benelli 28ga was the Garmin Xero S1 on the trap range. Set it for Practice/Custom/Station 3 and lock the trap to throw straight ahead. Shoot 25 rounds. For each shot it will show you this: It's a clean break (good hit), the center of the shot pattern was 7...

Truth. Even after using a root plow on the tree rows that strip is still less productive.

    SD trip 2023

I take my dogs to a put-n-take once or twice before season. Nope, it's not real hunting. In my trade we use flight simulators. It's not real flying; it's training for real flying. It allows canned situations and tests. The Feds require annual refresher training if people fly for money. For me...

    28 guage

An old USAF crewmate and hunting buddy, now passed on, used to say "a $30,000 pickup, a $1500 O/U shotgun, a $500 bird dog and you're worried about a $8 box of ammo?" Now obviously that was a long time ago as you can see by the prices. The gist of it remains true however.

I'm not a Fiocchi Golden Pheasant fan but a lot of people are. I think it is considered "premium" ammo. Scheels has 20ga Golden Pheasant 1oz of #6 at $28.58 per box. In 28ga GP is 7/8 oz of #5 at $20.99. YMMV.

    Iowa vs Kansas

I looked at the SD GFP pdf on where the habitat money went. I think they will likely say all the lake/boat ramp stuff was to improve waterfowl hunting. As my FIL used to say the only way you can get ahead of those guys is walk in front of them. They are always going to do what they want with...

    SD trip 2023

And the county will notice and record that and taxes on land will go up due to the higher valuation. The farmers and ranchers get slammed from every which way. But hey...yanno....a six of Pabst, right?

Great trip to SD (not necessarily defined by numbers)

Yes, I'd say far too light for pheasant. Note in the chart below that Steel 2 is pretty equivalent to Lead 4. The general rule of thumb to use 2 sizes larger shot when using steel seems pretty accurate.

Great trip to SD (not necessarily defined by numbers)

What size steel shot? I use 2s when I have to use steel on pheasant. others will likely chime in.

Depending on the store, usually $15-17 That’s the low end $ of 28ga phez loads but they worked just fine. Recommended to me by a friend that has same success with them.

This is what I used during this years SD trip. Killed them just as dead as my 12 or 20 did last year. Probably 6-7 DRT and only one cripple the dog had to chase down. Just didn’t see that many with all the corn still in.

    A dogs life

Not a fun way to end what looks like an otherwise great outing. What kind of tent rig caps your pickup?
