Solar Farms = Habitat Destruction ?

I don't get out much but was out the other day and stumbled onto a bit mine under construction adjacent to a REC's substation. Don't know how many there are in SW Kansas. Saw a report on one near Elkhart. They are big power users, maybe here because of the electric energy production? Reminds me...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

So thankful for the rainfall this year as we enter a very hot dry period and wonder when the next rain will come. I have the winter wheat ground ready. Usually try to plant between September 15 to October 15, but will plant when there is moisture. If it doesn't rain during that period, then will...

Solar Farms = Habitat Destruction ?

Dodge City has the highest sustained wind velocity, 16mph (24/7/365 average) That has brought lots of wind farms to this area. There is some push for solar in the area and it is meeting with some resistance. I just heard from a farmer friend of mine that he was offered good money to lease 160...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Here is the seed mix. I haven't seen any sunflowers in the field. I planted with my Great Plains no till drill and I might not have had the cups open enough and damaged the seed. Overall I am extremely pleased with the mix.

Star Seed does the PF mixes. This mix was not a PF Mix. Star Seed is a great company that I have used for years for CRP seed and other seed.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

It has been such an unusual year here at the Ponderosa with the rainfall, but knowing at my farm it could end any time. I, as always, remain thankful for my many blessings. Food plots here are hit and miss with the weather, but this year it was a hit, thanks to the timely and beneficial...

    Millet

I like all the varieties of millet. This is my food plot this year, the best of my lifetime, thanks to an unusually wet year here. There is some millet in the mix along with milo and some tall grain sorghum such as Atlas and Ellis. This mix came from Star Seed in Osborne, Kansas. The...

Disappointed that I am not seeing any broods in the road ditches. Saw my first in a road ditch in Haskell County last week. Hoping to see more soon.

    Accidental Pheasants in W Kansas

IMG_3649.jpg I certainly cannot speak to Idaho irrigation practices. I posted this thread in Kansas, so was only addressing Kansas and specifically the area I was traveling through. Here is the area I was in and the corners are not irrigated with corner systems. Since this area gets less than...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

I am seeing lots of cottontails this year at the Ponderosa and a few Jack rabbits. I did see one kangaroo rat, something that I have not seen for probably twenty years.

In Field Dog First Aid Kit

Curved jaw cable cutters(straight jaw cutters, vise grips, etc. just flatten the strands of the cable and won't cut it). Wooden dowel rod, about 1" diameter to keep dog's jaw open while removing quills.

    Accidental Pheasants in W Kansas

I don't get away from the Ponderosa often to see other areas around here, but a wedding and a distance parts run got me out and about SW Kansas. Time on the road is a time of reflection for me. I am always looking for wildlife(only saw one pheasant hatch) and looking at the habitat of the area...
