    Chick Sightings?

I have yet to see a hatch of anything at the Ponderosa. I have bob white quail, pheasant, Rio turkey and lesser prairie chicken. I thought I might see something during wheat harvest, but didn't. I am really hopeful though. Went 7 1/2 months without rain or snow, then it started raining. My...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

A really nice and unusual wet weather pattern here at the Ponderosa. Last year's 8.00" annual rainfall has taken a toll on this area and the subsoil is severely depleted. My winter wheat has come back from the brink of death to a cuttable crop(hopefully). The pastures(buffalo grass) are...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Had a nice rain this morning at the Ponderosa, 1.50". Praise the Lord. An unusual rain with cold northly winds. The last rains have everything green at the moment. Moisture in the forecast for the rest of the month. Hopefully, that will happen, as the subsoil moisture is still depleted.

    Rattlesnake protection- real experience please

I wear snake gaiters almost daily here at the Ponderosa because of the high numbers of rattlesnakes and my inability to hear them. I have never had a test. They do work well for keeping other sticky things like cactus at bay.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

It would be nice if that quarter of an inch primed the pump, but ten day forecast doesn't look promising. I am concerned with winter kill since the roots have not gone deep.

Thanks Drifter. I appreciate all you do. I wish my local FSA and NRCS was more wildlife friendly. I have tried to make plans that will benefit the wildlife and they want to do what is easy for them for them in the office(paperwork), while my plans create more work for me and more benefit for...

This year has been devastating to the quail and pheasant numbers at the Ponderosa. It is a rare sight when any are spotted. This week I did see two lesser prairie chicken, the first sighting of the year. The whitetail deer herd looks to be in really good shape and the antler growth this year...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Had a little drizzle and now dense fog. That's all for now and doesn't look promising in the ten day forecast. I made a run to Garden City yesterday. It is so extremely dry everywhere along Highway 400(50). Visibility poor with dust in the air. I pray better days will come soon.
