I generally carry about a box whether in grouse woods or prairies. I'm such a streaky shooter some days only need 3 to kill my woodcock or phez and other days may take close to a box, more so in the woods than prairie.

My wife has done this, but she pounded them out to about a 1/2 then breaded and fried. They were very good.

When I shot in college or at the ranges I always had hearing protection, however, when hunting I don't wear any. Like many any damage that could have occurred over my years of hunting is already done.

I also carry a wooden bit with rope that I can secure to keep the mouth open. I have yet to have to use it on my dogs but have on others.

As i'm sure you know the quills are barbed and any missed or broken off will continue to work there way interior of your dog. Wouldn't worry about lips as they will work there way out the other side, but deeper in mouth or near throat could be problematic if any were missed. I worked on a dog...
