    Party Hunting

Party hunting I can take or leave. Sometimes it is just the luck of the draw where which way the birds flush. As long as the group is all on the same page on whether you are party hunting or not. When I take my son and his buddy, I have no problem if they shoot my birds, as long as party...

Why did you go with the breed that you did and have you been satisfied?

I grew up with Brittany's and have continued to have them thru my life. I started doing more waterfowl hunting and more hunting in Dakotas/Cattails so I started having a lab in the pack, that period of my life will send when my current lab passes on. I then began guiding for grouse and...

    How many shells?

I generally carry about a box whether in grouse woods or prairies. I'm such a streaky shooter some days only need 3 to kill my woodcock or phez and other days may take close to a box, more so in the woods than prairie.

    Taking Non-Hunters Along

I took my wife when she was my fiancé, her dad was a big upland hunter so she enjoyed our time in the field and was amazed on how the dogs worked in the field. She didn't carry a gun but joined me a few times. Took a high school girlfriend goose hunting, we were at a stake and just pass...

    Tools?

I also carry the MN trapper kit in my vest and a Leatherman on my belt. Like many I'm usually not more than a mile or two from the truck. I've thought about emt gel but figured if wound is a that bad the gel won't help and pup would bleed out, please prove me wrong on this thought, being...

My wife has done this, but she pounded them out to about a 1/2 then breaded and fried. They were very good.

    Ear protection while bird hunting

When I shot in college or at the ranges I always had hearing protection, however, when hunting I don't wear any. Like many any damage that could have occurred over my years of hunting is already done.

    Porkie Pine

I also carry a wooden bit with rope that I can secure to keep the mouth open. I have yet to have to use it on my dogs but have on others.

    Porkie Pine

As i'm sure you know the quills are barbed and any missed or broken off will continue to work there way interior of your dog. Wouldn't worry about lips as they will work there way out the other side, but deeper in mouth or near throat could be problematic if any were missed. I worked on a dog...

    Overall season bird numbers

Tough to say really when I only hunt 5 to 10 days a year in SD. I would say they are about the same as last year. I mainly hunt by myself and regardless of the year it is not hard to kill or have shots at 3 bird. I hunt mainly public and some private, I will say this year didn't hunt a parcel...

    Special pheasant!

That was great advice and easy to understand for him. When I coached hockey that is what I preached go where the puck is going to be not where it has been. Such an awesome story and experience. Again, well done BB!

    Public land newbie

I generally wear my normal hunting boots but always have a pair of muck boots with me if weather or conditions warrant them. If the cattails still have standing water in them I don't walk them I let the dogs do the work, if they point then I will go in. As many have mentioned you need gear for...
