    The truth about Prairie Storm

Says in the description part: Payload mix of 70 percent standard copper-plated lead and 30 percent FLITESTOPPER lead produces even edge-to-edge patterns

    Here's my pipe dream

Man this always makes me jealous. 3 hours was how far I used to drive just for bad bird population area. Did day trips very often that way. Now I'm even further, but got other birds to hunt.

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

Yeah I would never say people shouldn't hunt the birds they see. And as you said, it's actually often times way harder to pull off, because the birds were already on high alert and know you are coming if you get out of the car. Just for me when it turns out really easy, it doesn't feel as good...

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

I shouldn't have said equally as rewarding. I more meant that it's still rewarding, and it doesn't feel dirty like it can when you just shoot a bird in a ditch that you walked 10 steps for.

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

I think that feeling is because of just getting lucky and having the birds by the road. You didn't "earn" the birds and that wouldn't have changed if you had taken the dogs out to find them or not. But if you walk a field without dogs and flush and kill something, it feels just as rewarding as...

How many birds would you lose/find without a dog?

Yeah I would still hunt if I couldn't have a dog. I just wouldn't hunt nearly as much. As mentioned earlier here, the dogs do an amazing job of recovering cripples, but is that because we cripple, or because we know the dogs can recover and thus take a bit less optimal shots? I've hunted a ton...

What choke is in your gun?

True 3 inch 12 gauge TSS 9 would have like 550+ pellets. That would not be a fun bird to clean afterwards. Unless you actually were taking 70 yard shots. I'm looking into running 1/2 oz tss 9 which is like a 1 1/8 oz of lead. Still more expensive but so low recoil I think it's gonna be a blast.

    solo hunting

I really like having it on the alpha. With the full unit, I would often leave it behind if I didn't think I was going far. Now I have it anytime out with the dogs and can still bring it separately if hiking without them. I was able to send a text just yesterday when I lost my key. And then was...

Any other states allow this besides MN ??

Colorado allows it for dusky grouse and Ptarmigan, but no other game birds.

    Lost birds

@KEOutdoors From all the posts, what I'm more curious now is how many birds you lost years ago when you were starting out? You say you don't understand how people lose birds, but unless you are saying you have never lost any in your lifetime, then you really should understand. I think you...

My End of Season (Colorado) Stats

It's been really good. Way better than dealing with traffic in the front range. Pagosa has one of the better hot springs if you haven't hit that up.

Yeah my boots are in rough shape right now. We are in Montrose.

My End of Season (Colorado) Stats

It takes a bit of work to save each track. But I'm hoping over time it means I'll always remember where to check back at. And not forget any spots. I did get good at finding the chukar and they always went back to the same spots. But my area for them is pretty bare ground rock which means you...

    Crispi boots fail

My go to are Irish Setters and I can wear through them in a year if I use them hiking on top of hunting. I think it's about 400-500 miles out of them. If you can get them on sale around $100-$130 it's not a bad price for the wear and for me they are the most comfortable. But it depends on model...

My End of Season (Colorado) Stats

With my Colorado bird hunting now close (West Slopes), I gathered up the stats for all the species I hunted. I was a bit apprehensive of posting since it looks really bad from a harvested standpoint. But I moved last year so 95% of all spots I hunted were brand new to me. On top of that only...

    Are these toast?

I can never throw away comfy boots. Use them when it's only dry forcast.

    Upland hunting coat

Merino wool baselayer is also my best tip. Very comfortable and way better wicking than any synthetic I've tried. Although underarmour was my go to for years before.

    Turn out the lights

Can't speak for every area, but desert quail are doing very well this year. The very wet winter last year is great for them. Hoping we get more soon to make them better next year.

    Pheasants and quail

Also keep in mind if you run 6s, you'll want a tighter choke to give the pattern for quail, but it might tear up the pheasant and you won't want to take long shots on them since it's a 6. 5s for pheasant and 7.5s for quail means you can run the same choke and have the right pattern for each.

    Pheasants and quail

6s if you want only own type. But I would also consider doing 5s for the pheasant and then carry 7.5s and switch once you bust the covey to go for singles.
