Start of South Dakota 2025-2026 season countdown

Ha, I keep mixing up the start dates. 113 from start to finish for residents, minus 4 for the gap between the 3 day resident season and when they can hunt again along with the non-residents. 106 from start to finish for non-residents.

Start of South Dakota 2025-2026 season countdown

I was wrong. It starts Oct 11th, so 105 days from start to finish. However, they only get 3 days for the resident season, and then have to wait all the way until the 18th, when the rest of us can join in on the fun. So 95 actual hunting days for residents, unless I messed up again.

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

I don't think I said they were equivalent. If I did, that was a typo. What I meant is I view the level of challenge in this order (near the end of the season too): Public land birds > private land birds > Pen raised birds How much each is greater than the next lowest type of bird is...

Cold fingers alert, north central SD weekend of 1/18-1/19

As of 11:30 PM, Google + my windchill calculator says it will be -26 windchill at 10 AM and -22 windchill at 11 am. Only 4 degrees difference, but I'm tempted to wait until 11 am to start. -19 windchill at noon. I have a 6+ hour drive back tomorrow, or I would definitely start later. Those...

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

Do you hunt the ditches too?

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

Interesting facet. So the are maybe notch above (in wariness) birds who have the luxury of roosting and spending daytime on private, but only so far as knowing to head to the ditches to avoid 2 legged predators.

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

For people who hunt ditches and regular public land, do you notice ditch birds behaving differently?

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

I also wonder if ditch birds might be inbetween in how they act, on the whole. Maybe they get pressured a little more than private land birds, but not as much as public? Of course, if they are in an area where ditches are hit hard, that might change the equation too. Do we think ditch birds...

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

Makes sense. I wonder if ditch birds near public land would get smarter about avoiding ditches too?

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

Do you think most would be close to public land or private land?

Ditch birds - public or private acting?

Game farm/preserve birds act differently than non-pen raised birds. They are also not as strong. Personally, I rate private land birds (that are very rarely hunted) only a couple notches up from preserve birds, regarding how they behave (not regarding muscle mass, strength of flying, etc.). I...

Is this an old or young pheasant?

I haven't seen one in Minnesota nor South Dakota. Only minimal hunting in Iowa, and didn't see one there. North Dakota must spike the wild waters with extract of rooster pheasant pituitary glands.

    Tripping or Falling

The birds seem to know when we aren't prepared! Yeah, must be my pure existence! ;) 3 days prior, at the same place, Honey had a close point on, what turned out to be, a rooster, in wetland grasses. He bolted away and I clocked him 3 times. I was watching him go up and then started...

Is this an old or young pheasant?

I'm going to guess 2nd year bird, with the possibility of being a 3rd year. Starting to curve at the tips. Lots of testosterone (or something else) in that boy. Did it take 2 dogs to bring him in? :)
