    Spring's here out here

Saw the first flock of California Sea Gulls heading across the Sierras for their spring nesting sites. I'm surprised that I haven't seen any Sandhill Cranes. They must have left already. The web cam at Glendive shows the river being ice free even though Fort Peck still has ice and there's still...

    E-collar controller found in Montana

If you're the guys who lost the controller near Tadpole lake WPA in NE Montana that I talked to on the road, it's at the Hi-Line Sporting Goods store in Plentywood.

    Found lost E-collar controller

I know this may be no big deal and a long shot at that but while driving down the road near the Tadpole Lake WPA SW of Westby opening week I came across two guys looking for the controller to their shock collars that had fallen out of the truck earlier. After I left them I found it in a framers...

BMAs closed due to fire danger starting to reopen

Check FWP's site to see what has reopened. The stuff in Region 4 hasn't changed but other areas are reopening. The first flight of Sandhill Cranes of the year went over central Calif. this afternoon. The storm that went through Montana earlier this week must have got them going.

Can you tell if a shot rooster is going to run?

Friends and I have spent a lot of time talking about this subject. How many times have you shot a rooster and thought you'd blown it up because of the cloud of feathers and that it fell like a rock and when you saunter over to pick it up it's gone? I've come to the conclusion that, after...

    How's the spring shaping up?

Looking at the various webcams around Montana it looks like spring is definitely here but there doesn't seem to be much rain. How's the nesting going and when is the critical time for spring moisture and no more freezing?

Upper Butte Basin may be closed first Tues.

The area manager of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area Complex (Little Dry Creek, Howard Slough, and Llano Seco) has posted a notice at Howard Slough saying that upland bird hunting permits for Llano Seco must be obtained at Howard Slough for the Monday after the pheasant opener and that Howard...

Info on steel shot's effectiveness on pheas.

I put a long post on the guns and ammo forum about a test that covers steel shot lethality on pheasants. Not new but I'd never seen it before and had some revelations for me. Since there are a lot of Waterfowl Production Areas and some refuges that require steel shot I though it might be useful...

Test of steel shot on pheasants

This is probably old news to everyone but I'd never seen the Tom Roster test of steel shot lethality on pheasants before. It's long but interesting and informative from a guy who wrote the book on steel shot loads. By Craig Bihrle, communications supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish...

Early signs of a hard winter

Today, here in Central Calif., hundreds of vultures migrated over the house heading south, the White Oak is full of acorns and the deer seem to be in the rut about 2 weeks early. I hope this doesn't mean a tough winter for Montana because you need a break. I hope it heads here instead because we...

    Block Management Info. incomplete

I received my BMA package and found there were some omissions in the information. For example there is a new BMA #224 West of Scobey in the area of heavy state ownership that isn't shown on the BMA maps or described in the booklet but is shown on the Region 6 web site that shows the actual BMA...

Cell phone coverage in NE Montana

I know it's not quite hunting stuff but, "She Who Must Be Made Happy" demands that I check every so often. I have ATT and get virtually no coverage even while camping under cell phone towers. There are a few bars at an intersection near Homestead, a hummock out North of Medicine Lake Refuge, a...

Has anyone received their UGBEP map package yet?

I used the MFW&P site to order their maps and haven't received them yet. It seems late so I thought I'd check to see if anyone else had them yet. 1 Sept. is getting close.

Fort Peck Reservation season being shortened?

I was talking to someone recently whose son is a biologist in Montana that told him there is talk that due to the very hard winter on the Reservation they might reduce the season to one month. Anyone hear something similar?

Brood counts at Gray Lodge State Wildlife Area

This Thurs. I will be helping do brood counts at Gray Lodge. It will be interesting to see if the turkeys shot last fall increased the pheasant nest success. I'll report afterward.

    Sky line hatch?

So, I guess it's spring because the rivers are still up even though its July. Any reports about areas of bad winter kills or poor production? I asked the state biologist about that area and in general he said based on their crow counts the numbers seem better than the long term average but...

    Extending my 20 ga. 2 3/4" chambers to 3"

I have a Browning Citori O/U 20 ga. Upland model that came with 2 3/4" chambers. That limits the steel loads to 3/4oz. and the lead to 1 1/8 oz. A friend gave me more than 1/2 a case of 3" 1 1/4 oz. Mark 5 Winchester shells so I decided to extend the chambers to allow more versatility in the...

Using an ice brine for food cooling while camping

I hunt with just an ice chest and a camper shell as far as creature comforts. That makes it hard to keep birds for very long when the night time temps are above freezing. When below, I just put the birds on the roof of the shell at night and back in the ice chest during the day. Has anyone...

CA State Wildlife Area Final Count

I thought I posted this yesterday but can't find it. Anyway, 370 pheasants were killed at Gray Lodge State Wildlife Area in Northern CA over the course of the season this year. That would have been reached by about 10 am on opening day in the mid 1990s. They shot 106 turkeys too so it will be...

    DFG changes hunt days

I know it's late but DFG has reduced the number of pheasant hunt days on the wildlife areas this year for the first time in decades. Normally the entire first week of the season was available for hunting on Gray Lodge with the first 5 days available on several other areas. This year it is only...
