    Preferred Hunt Start Time

You bring up a great point about allowing the sun to get up. Referencing back to wildcats post about "Things he's Learned", how do roosters always know how to fly in the sun??? Additionally, my opinion may also be skewed because I typically never have to drive more than a couple of miles from...

Things I learned and Questions I have

Surely the Warden would cut the "pack mule" some slack if he's ever hunted with a good retriever?!?

What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

I also got a pair of Danner Pronghorn's purchased around that same time (either 2001-2002). I didn't hunt near as much from then until 2010, but since then I have put a lot of miles on them and they are very comfortable. They are still the only hunting birds I own. I sent them back to Danner...

Things I learned and Questions I have

Keep drinking Irish whiskey instead of bourbon after the hunt and you'll keep getting to hunt alone 90% of the time!!!

    Preferred Hunt Start Time

For years, we started hunting 30 minutes before sunrise (legal start time in my State). The first spot on those early morning hunts would sometimes produce great shooting opportunities on opening morning or when the weather is really cold, but after that, it seemed we will hunt for a couple...

Things I learned and Questions I have

He with the fastest dog(s) or only dog(s) carries the most birds back to the truck. (Not always a good thing when it's hot or a long walk.)

    Loosing birds

Depending on the company I'm with, I enjoy spending time with my dog looking for downed birds. If there are several people, I'll send them on to continue hunting and lag back with my dog in search of a downed bird. If we have searched the area thoroughly first, I will then determine the wind...

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

This is the same wash and dry method that I use on my firearms as well. I learned through trial and error to not to oil my guns because they repel water during the rinse cycle and don't get the deep cleaning I prefer. You heard it here first! 😂

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

Let me know when that Franchi needs a new home! 😜

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

Interesting... I don't know if I've ever seen a 30" "field gun". Those Rizzini's are beautiful and probably a good value for the craftsmanship. I'd like to see one in person sometime.

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

My first trap gun was an 870TB with a fixed full choke. I shot it well, but eventually upgraded to a few different Browning's. My favorite was a BT99, until I thought I needed to add another barrel for doubles (I've never shot doubles) 🤦 Never went back to a single barrel gun after moving into...

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

    That it's a pretty gun!

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

The last thing I need is more guns since I don't shoot most of what I have ....but a Sweet 16 is definitely one I'd consider if/when the opportunity presents itself.

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

Like many of you, the gun safe is full of options, but I always gravitate to the same gun for the pheasant season. Mine is a Franchi Alcione (2 barrel set), but I mainly only shoot the 20 gauge barrels. It wasn't expensive when I bought it new in 2003. Cost with both barrels was $1150. It fits...

    Tripping or Falling

My fear is as I'm laying on the ground, the staggered triple opportunity will present itself. (I know I have had multiple shooting opportunities when either crawling under our over a fence with no gun in my hand.) You must live a "cleaner" life than me! Nice reward... Congrats!

    Cimarron this weekend?

I'd be tempted to join your pursuit if my calendar was free. I have been eyeing the grasslands as a destination hunt to see it and hopefully add the scalie to my harvested Kansas bagged bird. I visited with a lady in early December, and she said hunting had been tough, but noted the scaled...

    Slowing your dog

Something I heard years ago....if you aren't always training your dog, you are un-training your dog.

    Ringing in 2025 correctly!

All of Western and Southwestern Kansas that received timely moisture that avoided the drought has seen drastically increased bird populations the last 2 years. I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but sounds like southwest had seen nice quail populations also. It appears that it takes a good...

    Ringing in 2025 correctly!

2025 had been good for me also. Went out with 2 guys on Wednesday, and we filled our 12 bird limit. Unfortunately, the weather kept them from joining me today, but I was able to get out today alone and thanks to some great dog work, I was able to get my 4 birds again. Not going out tomorrow...

    Bad News

I am in agreement. Kansas tail feathers are special if they hit 23". My experience is 17-20' is normal. If you ever get one longer than 23", you better figure out how to display it. Last Saturday we cleaned 24 birds and the longest tail feather we had was significantly longer than all of the...
