Wow. $250 for 8 boxes. Glad I can make do with lead! Do what you gotta do.

Do you carry a dog first aid kit while hunting and if so what should be in one

Hunting where I do in SD no one traps. I have a pair of good cable cutters in my vehicle tool box but they are heavy and the chances of me needing them due to a snare are near zero. I always have a pair of NN-pliers on me for quill-removal when hunting, along with a roll of nylon tape to...

    Most Satisfying Shot

Too many, but all we can do is keep trying to get better at shooting, and at knowing when not to. And, yes, watching them until they are out of sight!

    Most Satisfying Shot

It's mostly a miss but a pellet ruptures an artery, resulting in a bleed-out. It is like bleeding out deprives them of oxygen, making them think they are under water, and they fly straight up trying to get to air. We had one of those a few years ago. Only one pellet hit the bird, but that...

Do you carry a dog first aid kit while hunting and if so what should be in one

Bottle or 2 of Saline Solution in the truck for washing grass seeds etc. out of the dog's eyes at the end of the day. NN-pliers for quills but also a roll of nylon tape to hog-tie the dog with so you don't have such a wrestling match during quill extraction. No change to diet for a long drive...

Update to the optimism post earlier!!

Yeah, no "Death Valley Days" so far this year. Everything is still greened up.

    Getting ready for the season

Great advice, Mosby. I'll try to take it! ;)

    Group hunting

But that is what I am talking about -- under SD party limit rules I can shoot my limit and then shoot birds for her, if we want more. Seems to be a good rule to me.

    Group hunting

My point was she would not be entitled to any birds in Kansas. The "party limit" rule does not affect only large groups.

    Group hunting

Well, west, my GF and I are (legally) "party hunting" every time we go afield. She works as hard as I do every hunt, so why shouldn't she be entitled to a bird or two just because she isn't a very good shot? We have never shot 2 full limits in a day, though -- that would make for too much bird...

    Group hunting

Show up as a group of 4 or more where I hunt and you have just about zero chance of being allowed into private property, the best of which will have vastly more birds than any public land, WIA, WPA, etc. Come as two or fewer and you have a chance. I have done it in a group of six, and it was...

Memorable quotes to think about as the bird seasons approach

"The most important thing in the world is that you be able to shoot a shotgun well." That is what I told my kids the whole time they were growing up, only half in jest. Never heard anyone else say anything so silly. :) Now I would double down on it, but would add . . . "and have good places...

    Fall speculation

One thing about SD, the weather can get "interesting" at any time! This was Monday near Chamberlain.

    Fall speculation

I'd chase chukars. Roosters in SD are too easy. ;)

Grass Awn's - DEADLY for your dog

Another plant threat -- last season in SD I noticed my shorthair picking something off his lower hind leg. Next instant he's struggling to swallow whatever it was. Pryed his mouth open and it was a pp-cactus bud about an inch long, thorns sticking out everywhere, nearly down his throat. I...

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

This topic has been discussed a few times in past years on various sites. Apparently no one can come up with an ad for a 250-round "case" dated before 1981, and that was only one mfgr. Doesn't really matter. At some point back there it seems every "case" had 500 rounds in it. Then it got...

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

Not always. Years ago cases had 20 boxes in them. You could buy a single box, or a case of 20. Mostly out of concern for the backs of people who had to handle them, some mfgrs started putting out 10-box "cases." Having some cases holding 20 and some 10, we began to call the smaller ones...

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

I just ordered a flat from Rogers Sporting Goods. Hated to pay $200 when just a few years ago they were $100, but they are $250 now a lot of places. At least I got free shipping, and if I can bag one bird per shell fired it won't hurt too much. :)

    20 ga Feather lightning

An alum alloy is fine unless you have an accident where lateral pressure is applied against the action of the closed gun. Then you see why nearly all of them are made out of steel. Steel can fail, too, but it is much less likely to.

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

Danners and Meindls for pheasant hunting by old guys? Do we need to check ID's here? Danner Pronghorns were the only boots I ever had that I praying they would hurry up and wear out.
