    Accidental Pheasants in W Kansas

Well said and wonderful stories. I'm saddened every time I see a weed-free stubble field. Back when, weedy stubble, particularly in terraces, were sure pheasant hunts. Weedless stubble near roosting areas may be OK. Most fields of corn stalks are worse; just short stalks sticking up out of...

"Thank you" for access to land?

A good start after getting permission: "If I have any luck, would you like a bird? A cleaned bird?" If they say yes, and even if you only get one, make sure they get it, and cleaned.

"Thank you" for access to land?

In 1994 a western Kansas ag operator gave me permission to hunt and then later in the season suggested I post his land. He did this after my report of a local putting four out-of-state vehicles of hunters on his land, no permission requested nor given. Grateful for such a valuable permission...

Dog and I Share a Common Language

Yes, the dog and I now share a common language. Our conversations only occur after lights out. I do have to initiate them, and they go as follows: Me: rrrrr Dog: rrrrr Me: rrrrrrrr Dog: rrrrrrrr! This can go on but the dog quickly takes an argumentative tone, so I keep it short.

    Trust your dog

Dog's don't lie. Once Gus went on point over a little pile of cornstalks. As I walked up I noticed that he was crisply moving his head a few degrees left, then back to center, then a few degrees right, then back to center, etc. I realized what he was doing and announced to the two other...

    First time Pheasant Trip SD

Think there are quite a few WPAs (waterfowl production areas) up there which are good pheasant hunting places with cattails, grass, and nearby crop stalks and stubble. The WPAs are well-marked with signage and are on the SD hunting atlas. Weird thing about SD is that the first week of the...
