    Goldador retriever wanted

What does a Golden retriever give a Labrador that the Labrador doesn't already have? What is a Golden better at?

    Season Wrap Up

For a number of reasons, I didn't get out as much as I had planned, so it was a bit disappointing from the dogs perspective.

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

I'm 65. I wear Irish Setter Wing Shooters for most of my pheasant hunting. I just opened a box with a new pair I had put away to start breaking them in for next season. They are comfortable boots, come in wide but are a bit heavy. I just bought a pair of Schnee Kestrel for warmer weather hunting...

    2024 gear review...what worked and what didn't?

Scheels upland pants worked well. Bought a second pair.

Training after 1 year old...now what?

I wish I lived in place with a local wild bird population, where I can walk out the back door and go hunting whenever I want. My wife tells me I'm free to move to wherever that is but she points out that I'll likely be divorced, poor, living in a trailer and feeding a cheaper grade of dog food...

Training after 1 year old...now what?

I used to feel the same, don't love it and probably won't do it again unless I get another pup. But I think it helps make a better bird dog. I got to watch him hunt with other dogs, watch how he works birds and train for steadiness, recall, retrieving and heeling. He needs 1 pass to get his SH...

Training after 1 year old...now what?

I ran my Vizsla in AKC hunt tests for pointing dogs. It was beneficial for both of us.

What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

The past few years, I've used Irish Setter Wingshooters. I've worn a hole in the lining and I'm breaking in a new pair of wing shooters but I'm also going to try a new boot. I bought a pair of Schee Kestrel's. Mostly leather, 0 flex boot but a bit shorter. Synthetic material on the tongue...

    Loosing birds

Nothing wrong with taking an old dog hunting.

    Loosing birds

I am a man with some experience with these types of dogs. I have an old Vizsla sitting next to me that couldn't find a bird in her food bowl but we love her regardless. My wife has a rule that if I bring a dog home, they stay. She could care less how or if they hunt.....so I learned the hard way...

    Loosing birds

If you're shooting and frequently crippling birds and you're not finding them, then changing ammo, choke, shot size etc., should reduce your number of cripples. Pattern your shotgun and buy better ammo. ND did a study several years ago and hunters that shot #2 steel shot had more birds and...

    Loosing birds

I know guys that shoot a 1000 rounds of trap a week and they can shoot whatever shot size the want on birds but the avg guy will have much better luck on wild flushing birds shooting #5's, than you will with 6 or 7 1/2 shot....especially on straight away shots. I have pointers and I don't go any...

    Loosing birds

I'm lucky. My 2 dogs are really good at finding downed birds. I normally stand back and let them do their thing and one of them normally brings it back.

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

My primary shotgun for pheasant is a Benelli UL 12 gauge. I hunt by myself most of the time, don't need to impress anyone and I'm a lousy shot.

    New state restrictions on boots

Now companies will have to make PFAS "compliant" boots...which will likely cost twice as much and work half as well. As if decent boots didn't cost enough already.

    New state restrictions on boots

Now that my hunting season is over, I've decided that I need to replace some of my boots. My Irish Setter's have a hole in the lining and my legs and hips got pretty sore the last time out. Some of my hiking boots need to be replaced too. I'm getting older but I think new boots, insoles and...

Company that does snake avoidance training?

Interesting. I never thought about restrictions on the snakes coming into the state. We are on the Missouri side and I'll have to look into that.. A bunch of us are hunting Montana, North and SD next year and hoping for someone with prairie rattlesnakes. If not, we'll end up going to one in SD.

Company that does snake avoidance training?

I volunteer with a bird dog club in the Kansas City area. Several members travel to the Dakota's and Montana to hunt and want to have their dogs go through snake/porcupine avoidance training this year, before next season. If possible, we would like to arrange to have someone come to Kansas City...
