Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

I have got to state that I have seen trouble using steel for pheasant hunting. Just a few seasons ago, we had several lost birds. We had two young men who were using Winchester 12 gauge Xpert #6 steel. They simply purchased #6 steel because the had heard that #6 shot was good for pheasants...

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

What size shot do you use in your 28 gauge? What, in your experience, is the effective range?

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

Oh, I certainly agree that bismuth is softer than steel and is much easier on the teeth. I find the softness and fragility of bismuth to be problematic. When using bismuth, I often found fragments of shot in birds that I cleaned.

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

Bob, I do most of my pheasant hunting and much of my duck hunting with a 16 SxS. For pheasant, I shoot 7/8 oz loads of #4 steel in the right barrel and #3 steel in the left barrel. These are reloads with a published velocity of 1550 fps. Both barrels are choked about modified. Shooting...

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

It's the off season, let's have a discussion. First, let me qualify. I hunt strictly with nontoxic shot. I have for several years now. I have been using steel for waterfowl hunting since before the national ban on lead shot. I pheasant hunt a number of State and Federal properties where...

    Long Distance Traveling for Birds

These two statements are ironic. My trailer may not make economic sense, but it definitely makes hygienic sense. BTW: The "dog rooms" in pheasant country seem to be very much as you described.

    Long Distance Traveling for Birds

Another option to consider are cabins for rent at state and county campgrounds. Some of these cabins are only available in early fall but some are available into winter months. The amenities vary but these cabins are very affordable.

    Long Distance Traveling for Birds

I have used all 3 options for travel when bird hunting. For years, I stayed in hotel in Iowa that had "dog" rooms. The place closed down a few years ago. In the fall, I like to stay in my 21' travel trailer, either at a campground with shore power or remote camping/boondocking. Late fall...

    Gucci Time

I do not let things like fellow hunters in a line annoy me. I tried bow hunting for deer a couple of times. I really did not like it. I would never suggest that it should be illegal. I just choose not to go bow hunting for deer. Oh, they don't even need dogs either. If you do not like the...

    Dark Meat Recipes

I keep pheasant legs, diver duck meat, goose meat, pigeon, etc. After the season, I grind it for use one of two ways. 1. Mixed 50/50 with ground cheap bacon. Picked up the idea on this forum. It makes an outstanding burger. 2. Mixed with cheap ground pork and the proper spices to make an...

    Remember Poly Chokes?

I will offer this observation: I once read a description of poly-chokes where the author stated that "they are as ugly as homemade sin."

    Which Barrel First For Over/Under

I will give another reason why the bottom barrel should be fired first. Last week, I did a gun fitting with pattern testing for a young man who shoots trap in the High School Clay Target League. This young man shoots left handed and is left eye dominant. He was shooting an SKB TT-15 Double...

    Gucci Time

There are times that really enjoy hunting just me and my dog. I also really enjoy sharing a hunt with one or two friends. Then again, I also really enjoy a well executed cornfield drive with a large group of friends. I seldom get to post and have to be one of the drivers as I have a bird dog...

    Preferred 20 Gauge Shell

Regarding the discussion on shot string, the following video is interesting and fits much of what has been discussed here. Take a look at the high speed video of shot striking the pattern board. Note, if you are relying on a long shot string to hit your target, you are not using the core of...
