    prairie chicken

I called and spoke to grouse research with MN DNR. The battery on the radio beacon is dead. They last about a year. The bird had both a radio beacon and a leg band. I sent the numbers off both and tail and wing feathers in. The beacon was used to determine the prairie chicken use of cattle...

    prairie chicken

Just got home from our prairie chicken hunt. My neighbor got on bird from a covey "popcorn" flush on Saturday morning. I choked. I got two birds with single shots on single flushes Sunday morning. One of my birds was the subject of a government surveillance program as it had a radio beacon...

    2024 Upland Season

A couple of years ago, at annual pheasant camp in Iowa, we took pigeon breast, dredged in frying mix, and deep fried it. We then coated in Buffalo Wild Wings sauces. We used the hot sauce and Parmesan garlic. All of it was eaten and nobody complained. There is much call to do it again this year

    2024 Upland Season

I have fixed pigeon as fajitas. It's not bad at all. Most people would say they taste better than that goose that I shot. The bacon wrapped poppers in the photo was made with dove. After hunting season, I will likely take all the pigeon meat, along with goose, pheasant legs, etc, grind it a...

Managed Dove Fields on Public Land

If Minnesota were to do some of this, it would help in hunter retention and recruitment. One the impediments to recruiting and retaining hunters is access. I would bet that accessible managed dove fields on WMAs near our population centers would be an economical means of introducing new...

Managed Dove Fields on Public Land

I put in some windshield time and knocked on some doors. I have access to some private property holding doves and know of some public land that has been good in the past. I am looking forward to this opening weekend.

Managed Dove Fields on Public Land

I just started dove hunting a few years ago after moving to Minnesota. One of the best hunts that I ever experienced was on a managed Dove field in Iowa. Iowa DNR manages several food plots for doves. https://www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/uploads/Hunting/mdove_plots.pdf I understand that...

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

That is a terrible pattern percentage with a modified choke. In fact that is a bad pattern percentage for a gun with no choke. This may explain why Roster's study determined that unbuffered bismuth demonstrates a higher crippling rate than steel for waterfowl.

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

I do not disagree with much of your assessment of Roster's article. When I read that I am reminded of waterfowl hunting on managed waterfowl areas in Michigan. Some hunters have zero clue regarding the effective range of a shotgun. Many will take shots at nearly any bird that they see...

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

After I started this thread, I purchased a few boxes of bismuth shotshells for an terribly low price locally. Also, on another website, I came across this company that has excellent prices and free shipping for bismuth shotshells...
