    Sheriff called on me

I had a couple of jack asses hunting right behind my house 2 weeks ago on the neighbors property about 75 yds from house. I was cleaning birds on the tailgate and boom. Shots sprayed my garage and I could hear shot buzzing through the air and a pheasant flying over the garage. I went out to...

    Hunting solo tactics

I learned back in the 70's and 80's that parking next to where I hunt equals less birds. Parking 1/4 mile away makes a huge difference. They will hear the truck door, tailgate, and dogs getting out of the truck and spook or be ready to spook. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a foolish hunter...

    Hunting solo tactics

I do sneak up on birds when there is a nice wind and by being quiet. When I know there are going to be birds, I remain silent and keep my dog at heal. This has bagged many birds that others would not have got to. The ones who like to yell "rooster", drink beer, talk, etc. will argue...

    Saw another 105# dog.

Most of the dogs don't weigh anything close to what people claim anyway. 120-130 lbs labs, I doubt it. I have looked at puppies over the years, and the owners claim the sire is 90 lbs. You get there and they won't go 75 lbs.

    Saw another 105# dog.

My dog had Candlewoods in his pedigree on the dams side as did most of my dogs. But his top side was Riks Risky Raider. I had a dog back in the 80's out of Candlewoods Nifty Nick. Another big dog and a good one. I just didn't have the knowledge of training back then as I have now, or at...

    Saw another 105# dog.

My old male labrador ran about 91 lbs. During season, with ribs showing, he would be in the 87 lb range. He could out hunt any dog alive in the uplands. He is the dog on my left. I could hunt from dusk to dawn 4 days straight then would have to rest him for a few days. I did duck hunt him...

    Yips

I think much of the time, the so called "Yips" comes down to gun fit, shell choice, and choke patterns. I always felt choosing the best and most expensive ammo had its benefits. After market chokes always seem to pattern better. I get lazy sometimes when buying a new gun and put off buying...

    Yips

Well 3 shells fired today and 3 more birds in the bag. 1 rooster and 2 male bobwhites. Tough hunting today, didn't see as many.

    Yips

Not me, automatic. I might miss 5 or 6 times all year, very seldom on pheasants.

    Yips

3 shells and 3 birds today. Bought a new Briley Light Modified extended tube for my new 12 gauge Montefeltro and it just crushed them with Kent #6 1 3/8 ounce. Must throw a much better pattern than the stock modified and improved crio tubes. I had not missed a pheasant all year until last...

    Tripping or Falling

Most of the holes I step in are actually coyote dens and not badger holes.

    Tripping or Falling

59 haven't fell this year, that I remember!!!! As far as a tracking device, no thank you. I go hunting to get away from technology and people. I miss the days when there were no cell phones and the rest of the technology nonsense. No better way to go than in the field.

    Surgery, Again

My 10 year old black female had Tightrope surgery for a torn CCL 16 months ago on August 29th. It was a long slow recovery but a great recovery. So she started hunting again this November. At 10 years old and with arthritis already set in, I didn't know how much and if she would be able to...

    2 day walk in trip

But Kansas was quite a bit more than what it is now.

    2 day walk in trip

Again, it is coincidence that the WIHA program and NR deer hunting began the same year? On the eastern side of the state there is much less WIHA than out west. Is this because the state targets pheasant hunters or is it because there are more outfitters and deer leases on the eastern side...

Wasn't that long ago that you were telling us that you were losing as many as you shot.

    2 day walk in trip

Much of the cattle grazed CRP that has cattle on it isn't owned by the landowner. When they open up emergency grazing and haying, farmers and ranchers start calling everyone they know with ground enrolled in CRP to get their cattle and swathers on it. There is a lady that owns 5 quarter...
