    From the Aberdeen coaltion

"The winter didn't harm the pheasant population a bit" A statement like that makes it very hard to take that blog/press release serious. I'm sure some areas were hit harder than others. If the spring nesting conditions are good, a successful hatch would help make up for the winter losses...

Here's some Federal premium at a good price I think

I really like B & P ammo, particularly the nickel-plated Upland Game loads in 12 ga and 28 ga.

    E Collar

Welcome to the forum. I got my first dog about a year ago, a Boykin Spaniel. This is her first season, and I'm using the Garmin Alpha 10, with the TT15 Mini collar. I've used it quite a bit so far this season- hunted ND for two weeks in Sept, a week in SD in Nov, plus a couple of days in KS on...

    Best Steakhouse in SD?

Chef Louie's in Mitchell was great, but as BB mentioned, it's gone. And by gone, I mean literally gone. The building has been demolished and that whole corner lot is completely empty now. Looks really strange. Sad to see it go. I had been to Cattleman's in Mitchell twice several years ago and...

Question for New Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen Owners

Mine is 5 years old, got it in Nov '17. I've used it a lot, but no wear on the lettering.

Sun setting on another season and a career for Breez

RIP Breez. I got my first pup less than a year ago, and I'm already dreading the day when she's gone. Hang in there and enjoy the memories!

    Sanity Check?

If it was me I'd hunt around Plankington, even though there is less public land. Definitely higher bird numbers there than Webster area.

    Chokes

Trulock Light Mod in my new-style Sweet 16 all season long for phez. I'll use that for sharptails & huns in Sept, and when I'm carrying my 28ga o/u it's IC/Mod.

    Browning A5 16 Gauge

I've had my new-style Sweet 16 for 5 years now. Absolutely love it. I have a Trulock light mod choke tube that I use about 95% of the time. That choke, and Golden Pheasant 1 & 1/8 oz of 5's has been a deadly combo for me. I've also used the Fiocchi High-Velocity 5's, and they actually patterned...

    SD Report

It's still been mostly hot. Was 107 on Tuesday, but that didn't seem to bother the birds. Drove around a bit that evening not long before a storm blew through. Good number of birds out on the roads, saw some half-grown chicks and one brood of about 10 that were smaller than quail. They could...

Anyone finding ammo in the off-season?

If you're passing through Sioux Falls, stop at the Scheel's. About the same selection as Cabela's in Mitchell, but definitely better prices. I was in the Scheel's 3 days ago, and the Cabela's yesterday.

    SD Report

Just spent a week in the SE part of SD on a work assignment. Back home for a few days now, and then I'll go back next week. Was out driving quite a bit, mostly paved roads, but I did go down some gravel roads when I had the chance. The cover is lush and green for sure. Good bit of water...

Am I the only one with birds to eat yet?

We ate the last of our phez a month or two ago, but still have 8-9 sharptail and 5-6 huns in the freezer. Vacuum-sealed, so they're in good shape. Plan to get to them soon, since Sept isn't far off.

Which type of public access lands do you target?

CREP is definitely my favorite. But I've done very well on WPA and GPA too. Most GPA's will have food plots planted. Mostly standing corn, which is fine. But sometimes you'll see milo food plots, and I've done well on those. Like dakotasj mentioned above, spending the 8am to 10am time frame...

    Cutting costs this year?

Was driving back home from Lubbock, TX to the Dallas/Ft Worth area yesterday. Filled up for $3.79 just east of Abilene. Lowest I've seen in quite some time.

    Cutting costs this year?

Last Spring I bought a hi-top Ford conversion van and turned it into a hunting camper/rv. Took out the 2nd row captain's chairs, and 3rd row bench seat. Built a single bed and installed it. Bought a 12v fridge/freezer. Already had camp chairs, Coleman stove, etc. Took it on a 3-week solo trip to...

    Texas quail & pheasants 2021-22

I hunt in the SW part of the panhandle. Only hunted quail one day, and didn't see a bird. Places that in '15 and '16, the same walks would've produced 5 or 6 covies for sure. Pretty depressing.
