Could We Have More CRP in the near future?

Those are the best rates in CRP programs but in the big picture the ethanol plant pays more. What used to be considered marginal acres good for CRP now pays out to run crops at current yields/prices. You'll never get CRP funds big enough to get back all those acres unless that demand is scaled...

    Is this pheasant special??

Jgreenhead's I've seen before a number of times and it was referred to as blonde or buff since chickens get the same genetic condition and are described that way. Between hunting parties of friends and families over the years I've maybe seen 6,000 pheasants harvested and maybe 5-6 of these had...

    End of shooting time

If you consider looking up in the regs if shining pheasants with headlights is illegal like deer, you might be at sunset.

    End of shooting time

Always like to get at least one bird a season at the end of a dark, cloudy day where I can see the fire out the end of the barrel. If you consider taking a warning shot to make sure it's a rooster in the muzzle flash, you might be at sunset.

    Feral cats

You can't ethically shoot anything on on anyone's private land without permission so that's not the question. On public land or right of way roads/ditches, how do you make the decision to remove an invasive species? If I roll up on a cat and it stands there looking at me and I can visually see a...

Looking for a barrel set for a beretta BL3

Keep in mind you may need to settle for cold blue or belgian blue processing as the high temps of traditional bluing might melt the solder. Might come down to how high a temp material they solder with in your location and not wanting to warp the metal.

    River Corps property

Discussed that episode in another thread- "Chamberlains-un-hunted-ring-necks". A third of the show was them getting blown off the river by high winds and hitting a walk-in away from the river instead, another third took place on what appeared to me to be a preserve hunt on river front land and...

    crop reports 2020

You're right about it being snow depth dependent. I was staying opening week with a combine driver trying to get corn in in East Central SD. The topsoil was so dry that any complete melt of the 3-5 inches of snow they had will get absorbed enough to allow them to operate with tracked units. That...

We try to go as fast as we can in the pickup while still being able to spot heads, pickup movement and hear them which is about 25-30mph. If you go slower, birds are not used to that and will bolt and keep running much of the time if you slow roll next to them at 10-15mph. I wear ear muffs with...

    crop reports 2020

That last 20% of corn has been stuck there since Monday afternoon 10/19 in many places. Won't likely get back in the field until Sat 10/31 after a few good days of sun and wind to get the snow off the corn cobs. Wiped out the two weeks ahead of schedule they had been running at.

    Snow and pheasants?

I'm thinking the dumb birds in the snow is a rural legend cooked up by the DNR/GFPs to get you to come back after opener and hunt another week in Dec. After hunting all morning in SD with 5 inches of the first snow of the year coming down, they were all locked up so tight in the cattails we...

One more thing- while going from ditch to ditch, let your dog stick his head out the window beside you. They will scent, hear and see birds in the ditch that you will miss. Funny to see them get birdy from up close and get nervous as they don't know how to point/flush out the window.

Ditch Hunting- First pick a ditch that has birds in it. Block'em, walk'em, shoot'em. My dream ditch has corn on one side with the headrows taken off and roosting cover on the other side with cattails or canary grass with road approach 1/4 mile away. Here's why: -Cover next to standing crops...

    Lead shells - completely out!

Has this same discussion in the Guns and Ammo forum. I personally cleared out the in-stock Federal PS loads in 12 gauge for Cabelas and Fleet Farm in the cities in Sept. which amounted to 13 boxes. Needed just about every box this year for my group so glad I got it. I do recall seeing Fleet had...

    Crash course in SD hunting.

Most important thing you can do is drive every day from 4:30-sunset on gravel roads. They will either be moving to roost or picking gravel. When you find birds, stay in that area and hunt them hard. You drive by 100 birds for every one you see doing this. It's a very rare day that birds don't...

Did 4 full days of hunting from opener to Tue and spent mornings and afternoons in different sections of the area bounded by US14, SD45, US12, US37- basically 25 miles either side of 281 from Aberdeen to Wolsey. Got limits for the 3 of us every day hunting ditches. The extra hours and hunting in...

Deli roast beef and Virginia ham with provolone on 12 grain bread. No cheap shells or sandwich fixings allowed on SD trips. High winds yesterday and the snow this morning kept them in the cattails all day. Really early we found a few standing on barb wire or first spruce tree branch. Then it...

    Road conditions

3 in of wet snow turned the roads slick. Oil roads were a white out of slush. Gravel was barely passable in 4x2. Needed 4x4 to get down any section line or travel gravel in any comfort.

Birds everywhere. Spots that had few birds last year but not enough to hunt now have good numbers and are producing. Spots with high numbers have huge covies that just explode left and right. 3 hunters, no dog this year, hunting ditches and we've filled out with 9 each day, hours early before...

    Road conditions

Doing a lot road hunting right now. Everything is so dry that the 1-2 inches of snow today in East Central was melted and back to dry on the dirt and gravel roads with 33-34 degrees and light winds. Nothing is frozen yet as the days have been above freezing. All the section line roads and...
