    Preferred Hunt Start Time

Completely agree. This is exactly why I set out to find permission on private land 20 years ago. I'd get to a public spot an hour ahead and others would show up minutes before, only to just go 200 yards down and start hunting there instead. I'm finished with that rat race. I get to a spot...

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

You know a shotgun is really old if there's no recoil pad lol

    Season Wrap Up

Where was this deep snow last year speak of? Most of the Midwest had the mildest, snowless winter on record.

    Pointer or flusher debate

I'm also a British lab owner, mine turns 13 later this month. The only time period she ranged too far consistently was her second season. I fixed that with some e-collar training. It's rare that she is beyond about 20 yards of me since that season. I know what you mean by trying to keep up...

    2024 gear review...what worked and what didn't?

They are Danner Vitals in camo pattern. I misspoke earlier, they are 400G insulation, not 600.

Let’s talk boots (older crowd on here)

Full disclosure, I am not mid 50's +. I've primarily been a Rocky boots customer and user my hunting life. I've generally been satisfied with them too. I use them as an all-purpose hunting boot for spring turkey, deer (stand hunting), and pheasant hunting. So I need something that fits that...

    2024 gear review...what worked and what didn't?

Danner hunting boots. Bought them last January and although I used them to turkey hunt last spring and to deer hunt for a week in November, the true test was walking miles while upland hunting. I expected them to be stiff, but they really weren't. I've generally been a Rocky boots guy most of...

    Family

While I think it's admirable for trying to introduce someone to the great outdoors, when a firearm is involved, safety is more important. No rooster is worth getting shot at. Anyone unsafe with a firearm has and will not be hunting with me. I'm not taking BBs just so someone else can tag...

    Family

All 3 of the individuals I mentioned above only got into pheasant hunting because they knew me, and I invited them with. They would have never gone on their own because 1) they don't have anywhere to hunt, and 2) they don't have a dog. The other thing is, at least in terms of who I take with...

Accessibility to decent hunting land (public or private) and a dog are major hurdles. Of course, neither one is required, but they are the two largest variables IMO. I think a lot of this has to do with whether the person is into the outdoors stuff in general. If that person is already a...

    CARP

Otter - I've seen big dead carp before too near an open ice hole.

    Loosing birds

That's a reasonable number - less than 7%. I think 10% is a number that upland hunters should try to attain regularly. Goose has lost 18 JUST this season. If he's bagged 200 birds, then I can understand that number.

What's up with this "winter" weather?

Wow, almost 60 degrees in late January? Its about 40 degrees here which is quite a bit warmer than normal but 59 is absurdly mild.

This happened on the last trip

One of the spots I hunt about 3 times/season is owned by a dairy farmer. He dumps his dead cows/calves on one end of the area I bird hunt, out of sight near a small grove of trees. Every time I walk past it, my dog bee-lines right to the carcasses lol. She is a bottomless pit when it comes to...

    Preferred Hunt Start Time

I usually start between 11am - noon. I don't remember the last time I started before 11am or hunted on opener.

I didn't lose any this season either. Sometimes less is more when it comes to hunting efficiency.

    Future of CRP ?

There was a LOT of opposition to it when it was first proposed. Then there was even more when it was implemented in phases over time. It was accomplished with a democratic governor and a republican legislature.

    Bird dog foreleg protection

I don't think it's a stupid question. A lot of dogs can figure out pretty quick what hurts and should be avoided moving forward. My dog did. Since that episode many years ago, she is way more cautious around fences.

    Loosing birds

You just posted above you were going to take most of his advice. Literally dozens of people here offering advice, including superior ammo, you say you're going to take it, and then complain about it being too expensive. Its no wonder you were on the verge of getting banned. Make it make sense.
