    Black Cloud for Pheasant

95% of bismuth 5s at 30 yards, wont need to get out the grinder to make bacon ranch pheasant burgers 😀 I didnt even know federal was making bismuth shells in the flight control flex wad, but I see they are on sale for $35/box plus another $5 rebate which is a great price for factory bismuth...

    Bird shooting lesson learned

Always always pattern at the distance you are going to shoot. No sense in a 40yd pattern if your shots are always under 30. Unless you are a good enough shot to hit the head up close, most of us arent. Whenever i try that I end up missing the first shot trying to snipe a head and then kill it...

    Affinity 20 Gauge Ammo Issue

Well the brass (steel) always swells to the chamber size upon firing in every gun with every shell. I dont see why those shells would hang up when others work fine, especially both 2.75 and 3". Especially considering you say other fed shells work fine as all current fed 20ga use the same hull...

    Black Cloud for Pheasant

Something to consider is that flight control wad likes no choke, often the more open the choke the tighter the pattern. I used to shoot IC for 40-50yd goose pattern when I shot black cloud, when i tightened to Mod it opened up significantly, and full was like throwing a handful of shot at the...

    Black Cloud for Pheasant

Those 2s will work great. Black cloud is iffy on patterns, just like prairie storm, be careful you arent too tight and shreading the birds to pieces. I preferred steel 3s when i used steel, but theres not enough difference between the two to go buy new shells.

    Another Shot Size Thread

If she wont shoot past 30 she certainly doesn't need bismuth, and definitely not bismuth 3-4. Bismuth 6s would be plenty, or steel 4s. A 12ga load of bismuth 3s/4s at sub 30 yards sounds like an inedible bird, they are when i hit them with my 20ga 4s that close. Ic choke and the steel 3s sounds...

    Another Shot Size Thread

Just tighten the pattern a little and the overall density will be adequate, you wont be able to shoot an IC choke at 35 yards and expect dead birds every time as the shot count just isnt there. Overchoking is a thing with #2+ steel also, so be aware. Once you get too tight it will blow out and...

    TSS Pass-through

Penetration is penetration, be it lead steel or tungsten. Tss at 1500fps 9 penetrates the same as lead #2 at 1200fps. The difference is lead cuts and drags feathers too which will reduce the lead shot's real world penetration on a bird, tungsten goes right through feathers because of its small...

    Iowa Doves

You can also let the kids sleep in a bit and go around 9am. A vast majority of the yahoos will be gone by then and youll often have a whole field to yourself soon after. The birds will fly all day on opener

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

I will absolutely try to remember to take some pictures and share reports for you this season. Remind me in November if I forget. I'll probably go the preserve to get the dog some work in early October if we get cool weather but we all know those birds are not built like a wild one, definitely...

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

None of that matters when it comes to shotgunning birds, everything mentioned leads to cripples. Breaking a wing, a leg, cutting big hole in meat etc. We kill birds by multiple disruptions of vital organs; heart, brain, lungs, spinal cord. Thats why a tight pattern is so necessary when it...

    Iowa Doves

It can be fun, but you wont do much "hunting" on opener in a public field. Everyone just sits on buckets or stands in the field and pass shoots at the birds. Dont get frustrated, youll see some crazy stuff. Youll see blackbirds, blue jays, finches, killeer, hawks all shot. Guys will be standing...

    Importance of eCollars?

I heard something today that made me think of this thread. A guy told a new trainer "an e collar is a 600yard long hand smack"

Is Bismuth Shot really more effective than Steel?

3/4oz #9 TSS. Same penetration as steel BB and bismuth #2. 2" gel penetration at 53yd. Note I would never ever take a shot even close to this range, pattern testing was done for Ballistic Products for their load development. But clearly it would work, no pheasant is making it through that.

    Dog scratching constantly

We dont have two definitions of pricy, we are talking about two different foods. Although $2/lb+ is pricy imo, but all food is going up these days. I referenced vet only prescription allergy food that is grain free, you mentioned a standard off the shelf grain free food. Just two different...

    Dog scratching constantly

Be careful with grain free when not needed. Its been big talk in training clubs the last few years that more and more trainers that end up with dogs having DCM when feeding grain free. My vet said absolutely no grain free food when getting puppy shots and talking food choices with this last dog...

Solar Farms = Habitat Destruction ?

Have you ever sat at a store and watched women park? Sounds like a huge problem having a bunch of support posts all over a parking lot.. I had to go to kohls the other day for a dress shirt.. it was absolutely hilarious, there was 8 or 9 pickups parked way in the back by themselves, and...
