Well I've got Iowa in my bio, but I'm not in your neck of the woods. I'm closer to Missouri than Des Moines, which can make for some challenge when looking for pheasants.
I have seen a few coveys, but I haven't specifically targeted them. The quail I saw this year were all south central, although I heard some while hunting an hour outside Council Bluffs
Not my experience but I have heard there are a significant portion of the landowners that posted their land just because they want to know who and when, but readily give permission.
Are you using the ND Game and Fish hunting atlas? If so, the orange crosshatching is for posted areas. Landowners have electronically posted the property as NOT open to public hunting. ND has unique property law concerning hunting.
That's a nice morning. I went for a couple hours with a friend and saw a few hens. There was some snow down here yesterday but not enough to bunch them up. It looks like that is coming tomorrow, I can't wait.
I listened as my college team did that yesterday. The Hawkeyes aren't known for offense, the opposite actually but with a 10 point lead early 3rd, they shut down the offense and spent the rest of the game losing the lead.
Each time I go to hunting at Neal Smith I'm struck with one of two things. Where are all the birds? Or man these birds are smart.
Today was both. Long walk through lots of good cover, only bird I saw was a hen my lab tracked around in a 1/4 mile circle.
What have y'all experienced out there?
I really enjoyed my trip to westriver ND last October for the first week of their nonresident pheasant season. I camped at a national forest (grassland) so dispersed camping was free. I saw plenty of pheasants even though I was targeting sharptail. Message me if you want more specifics I'd be...
@Bob- I'm glad to hear that your "rant" was hyperbole, it did sound out of character but I'm newer to the forum and wasn't sure.
All good hyperbole must have a seed of truth, you do bring up some good reasons to avoid hunting the ditches especially dog safety. I haven't sworn off hunting the...
Many of the behaviors and actions that you mention and are repulsed by are already illegal. As you yourself said "Break one rule, break them all".
How does making the right-of-way off limits to those who will follow the rules, correct the illegal actions of the rule breakers?
I'm sorry it didn't work out for you McHunter.
My favorite spot locally was an IHAP that went out of the program this last year, not sure if it timed out or was because it changed hands. I believe IHAP ground is pretty well utilized here. I started the opener this year on one and had 3...
Unless it was just added to IHAP (and probably CRP) I have found them to be better habitat and better managed than the other public hunting areas. I am in South Central where we don't have very good pheasant ground unless it is managed for that. It usually takes about 2 full years for the...
