    Opening Weekend in Kansas

I agree Husker. Been hunting SW Kansas and South Dakota for 20 years now (South Dakota every other year) and in the early 00's I'd tell people that SW Kansas was just as good as South Dakota. Now with that being said, I was hunting private ground in Kansas and public in South Dakota. My...

    Youth Season

Took two kids out today, had a few chances. Ended up putting one in the bag after a some misses. Seen some birds but not as many as last year (same spot). Looking forward to next weekend!

    Status of my hunting range

I have the exact same stickers on the back window of my truck, same spots too. Good luck this fall/winter. Will be heading up to SD to hunt public in about a month. Can hardly wait!

Best way to plant pen raised quail for hunting?

I went to the national gamebird convention in Orlando probably 15 years ago and heard a guy from Texas that runs a quail preserve talk about doing it this way and I liked the idea too. The quail stay relatively close to the area and they are very spooky when done like this. Funny thing is I...

Best way to plant pen raised quail for hunting?

Place your cage in some cover and prop open the door and let them walk out on their own. Then an hour or so later come back around and pick up your cages. I usually put anywhere from 3-6 in a cage so it kind of resembles a small covey. Has always worked well for us.

    Pheasant license plate

Sweet, I hadn't run across that sight yet. Thanks for sharing.

    Pheasant license plate

Looking at getting a new pheasant license plate for the front of the truck. I had a sweet looking, old school, Quail unlimited one until someone helped themselves to it. Been looking on-line and haven't really found one that catches my eye. Share 'em if you got 'em! Thanks

    Group Builder let's hunt

KsHusker, you need to get to South Dakota! It is a pheasant hunter's paradise! Been going up there every other year (all public ground) for 15 years now and I love it! The bird numbers aren't what they used to be up there but everything it's still awesome! We usually go the end of October or...

    Little ones!

Hey Preston, not sure about the post in 2016. We ran a couple surrogators for a year or two so that might have been a post about chicks for those things. In my mind we didn't have much success with them and the weekly maintenance drive (an hour one way) wasn't worth it. We ended up buying...

    Little ones!

Not much action on the Kansas board, figured I'd post a neat story. My family owns some ground in SE Kansas (an area with no wild pheasants) and 3 years ago we released some pheasants. If I remember right it was around 7 or 8 roosters and maybe 5 hens. Seen a couple of the roosters around for...

    Waterfowl?

I do quite a bit of goose/duck hunting. Goose meat is just like any other wild game, if it's inedible to you it's probably because it was handled poorly or cooked wrong. I've got a couple recipes that are good plus we make a lot of jerky out of ours. You'd have a hard time telling the...

Boot Leather , Brush and Brittany’s End of the Season

I agree with your thoughts on Western Kansas. My wife grew up there and would never go back, but if it was up to me I'd love to live out there. My season was probably the worst I've had in 25 years of pheasant hunting. Made it out West 3 times, first 2 trips weren't very good, however this...

    Tough hunting

My buddies and I tried the NW part of the state this past weekend. Haven't hunted up there for 7 or 8 years but it's been such a struggle this year we decided to head back out there and give it a go. Man, tough hunting is an understatement! Maybe seen 10-12 pheasants in two days with 4 guys...

    What's in your vest?

"Uppity", now that's funny! My dog wears a e-collar and I'm about as far from uppity as you'll find. Also, why

    How's the season so far?

Just checking in to see how everyone's season is going? Don't need locations or even parts of the state. For me and the couple guys I hunt with it's been a struggle to put birds in the truck. We've hunted 5 days now and it's been the worst year I can remember. Usually we don't have many...

    Nov 24-28 report

Great report! I've always ran shorthairs but I've been looking at trying a Setter and have spent the past few days doing some research on them. I really like the markings of yours, sure is a pretty dog. Didn't make it up to South Dakota this year, reading your report has me itching to head North!

    Opening Weekend

SW Kansas (private ground) was pretty poor. Seen a few birds but it seemed like we were hunting January birds instead of Opening Weekend birds. All the birds harvested were older birds, prob seen 30-40 pheasants each day (poor compared to what it was last year). There were some quail around...
