    Kennel cover question

Hey guys, so I have an insulated mud river cover that I got a good deal on last year. I have it on but the kennel always rides In the cab anyways. Have an opportunity to head to SD next week for a bit but the dog will have to ride in the bed. Maybe a dumb question but do I just zip it up tight...

    Losing confidence in dog

I will add I have been out a lot this week and have gotten her on lots of birds. ( both preserve and wild) She knows what’s she doing and is a force. I feel a bit silly making this thread in the first place but it’s given me lots of inspiration and advice. Patience being number one. And it...

    Losing confidence in dog

Very good point. I have caught myself doing this even with regular training in the yard and it’s somethiny I’m working on. Luckily she is stubborn and crazy enough and is quite forgiving of my piss poor training. We always end on a good note. She my buddy

    Coconut Oil - removes cockleburs!

Very good to know, Thanks for the tip. My pup doesn’t get them to bad anywhere else but the ears can be an absolute nightmare sometimes. Unfortunately she does not like them to be brushed but doesn’t mind me picking each thing or tangle out one at a time🤪 I can tell when’s she had enough and...

    Ground swatting

My first bird ever was a chukar I ground swatted with a BB gun when I was just a kid. That was the first gun I got to carry when I started to get to go hunting. I took many shots, and was probably a pretty awful death for that bird. But by god I was certain I was the greatest hunter on earth...

    Losing confidence in dog

Headed to the game farm this morning. Big confidence boost for the both of us. We had fun. She found all our birds and I was shooting well enough, ha! She caught a running hen, I missed a chukar, went over where it landed and she got on the trail, chased it 120 yards through the woods and...

    Losing confidence in dog

If there is a busy road near by and excited dog is chasing possibly. No time to waste. Correction is better than a dead dog. Dogs will do dog stuff sometimes, no matter how obedient. IMO

    Losing confidence in dog

I like it. Carry on everyone. Fun to read all the different responses though. If my dog could use the internet she would probably be bitching about me as a hunter/ trainer. Back to having fun.

    Losing confidence in dog

I’ve noticed this exact same thing too. And I’ve had the exact same things happen. Just like I’ve been frustrated with her she’s probably been with me too. Shes surprised me a few times and has flushed a rooster off the nose and I wasn’t ready and missed. Talk about a let down for a young dog...

    2023 Season

I hate wearing gloves. I rely on hand warmers when deer hunting. Work well. The other day out pheasant hunting I put hand warmers in the palm of some thin gloves. Not perfect but seemed to work ok. Haven’t been out waterfowling when it’s been that cold in years but I would probably rely on hand...

    Losing confidence in dog

You guys rock, lots of awesome advice. I’m trying my best to articulate what I’m experiencing. It’s tough though because it always so hot and cold, etc. Not going back to a trainer. She did two weeks bird and gun. Did well, didn’t like the aggressive pigeons all that much. Twas alarming, but...

    Losing confidence in dog

Yeah, your situation is very much like mine. She is flushing lots of hens, and a few roosters, but I would agree not an ideal classroom setting. Birds being shot that they find and flush is what needs to happen. And quite a bit of it.

    Losing confidence in dog

Appreciate it. Lots of good advice. She is a bit of a weird dog, she’s soft, and I think the part about lack of confidence in her task is very spot on. I know She loves to hunt.. but I’ve had to really nurture that prey drive.. that she is a predator. Think I’m just gonna take a step back and do...

    Losing confidence in dog

No she’s not gun shy. She hears a shot and is looking like crazy for a bird Been pheasant hunting since I was a kid. Had springers growing up until I was about 20. Haven’t had a dog in ten years and this is my first that’s truly mine. I probably do have to high of expectations.

    Losing confidence in dog

I know the season is coming to an end in a few weeks, but I have been feeling frustrated with my springer the past couple hunts. I know for a fact she is missing birds, and I am really starting to question her nose and ability. We do hunt a lot of pressured public land, which is tough, but I’ve...

    Tail talk 😄

I swear sometimes guys think those tails are what makes a field bred springer. I mean you can have a field bred springer that just had its tail docked. It’s a thing done by humans.. Maybe I’m confusing it with guys more meaning it like bred specifically for trials and such. Not necessarily just...

    Dog in Heat Questions

I too went through this back in October. I just kept a close eye on her and didn’t leave her unattended even in my fenced in backyard. I personally did have an incident with rather large temperament change. I believe there were other factors but I do think her hormones played a role.

    2023 Season

Been a long couple days trying new spots. Saw some birds and had some opportunities. Lots of hens. Debated not going out this morning but decided to try a new WMA close to home, and was rewarded at about 9:04 with a nice rooster. Unfortunately the dog missed that one and I flushed it but that...

    Hunting With A Backpack

I have been avoiding hunting around iced over ponds lately in case the dog runs out on it during retrieve or what have you. Weird weather lately and unsure of thickness. Could be an awful scenario.
