    A lesson of life

Apr 2012 has turned in to a bad month. I lived for ten years in Topeka KS and made a lot of friends, one was my hunting/fishing buddy John, he always had good hunting dogs and I was sad to leave him in KS with me going to SD. About 5 years ago he lost his hunting dog and I found him a good...

Keep out my corn and sunflowers

Just heard a news article that they are going to allow a large increase to both corn and sunflower producers for the use of a spray repelant that does not kill birds it only makes the birds stop using the area. It may not kill birds at the point of contact but will have to hurt long term numbers...

    Good early news

Had local PF member checking up on if I left my food plot in as they provided the seed and shared the cost. He emailed me to let me know that while checking my food plot he flushed 40 plus pheasants--all hens, this was in the area where we had almost zero hunting success last fall. I don't know...

    Starting to look real dry

One would think its to dry, hope we don't do the TX/OK thing this year, but one has to have doubts---there is a 125 acre grass/forest fire burning inside the city limits of Rapid City and it's only 30% contained--for heavens sake its only the 9th of MAR whats Jul/Aug going to be like...

    Does conservation stand a chance?

I'm so mad I don't even know how to begin. I don't know all the details but a Pheasants Forever Chapter that gave landowners $175.00 to plant 5 acre food plots, will now only do $70 for a 2 acre plot and "NO CORN". Seems that people last year took the money--planted corn--then instead of...

    SD Springer a champ

I see in the Mitchell Daily Republic dated Jan 27 there is a front page article about a English Springer Spanial (with pictures) named Sunrise Annie Belle owned by Joe Schweldop of Lane SD. Says she is a national champion. Good to see a SD dog doing well in field trials.

    South Dakota/Iowa border fuzzy?

Our farm is about 150 miles as the crow flies from the Iowa border but still got a request today from Iowa Department of Revenue to file our Iowa income from for 2007,says we owe them $2642.00. Trapping finally

Well I've tried everthing else so this time I looked for and found a local person who is going to trap my land. I would but it's a 300 mile one way trip there--kinda hard to run a trap line. He did a through inspection and thinks there are to many coons and badgers and has found 4 fox dens--I...

    New CRP

For a gloomy overcast day it turned out pretty good. Got mail from the NRCS office. The first big step is complete in my quest for more CRP. The options are for 18.1 or 21.6 acres of Saline Seep--- a continuous CRP practice (#18C I think)--guess I'll go with the 21.6 acres. This will make the...

    December roosters

Even though its only late Nov I got a taste of the old Dec roosters this weekend. Whats a Dec rooster you ask--well there are two types, one that holds so tight in HEAVY cover that the dog has trouble getting into that cover to flush it (for you guys with the pointy type of dogs--you cant even...

    Bad Day

Well after decades of hunting pheasants if finally happened today--I got shot:eek: durning a pheasnat drive. I was blocking and got hit by a load of #5 shot from about 35-40 yards away--it hurt--a lot, I have retained 2. All the others were stopped by a heavy hunting jacket and brush...

    Pheasant Hunting not shooting

Today I was reminded that it is Pheasant HUNTING not pheasant shooting. Hunting was tough as although we saw a lot of birds but the roosters were hiding or flushing wild. Still it was a great day of fellowship and some great dog work ( a good dog can sure make one look good).
