    Hunting with a brittany dog

How do Brits age as hunters? Some breeds seem to age better than others - are they still productive at, say, 11, or is that a geriatric dog that will see very little time on the ground? Not talking multiple day hunts.

    Uncommon bird dogs

I could live with an EP tail or a very tight setter tail, but nothing that is too moppy SM's and the like are too much for me. Labs are fine. A tail on a Brittany looks awful to my eye - looks like a dust mop, but whatev - to each their own.

    WY Chukar and Hungarian Partridge?

End of Feb seems too long for marginal populations of birds. I've hunted them before with some pretty dedicated research and only turned up a few coveys in several outings ad many miles walked. I'd push into one of the more traditional chukar/hun states if I wanted a better chance of a quality...

    GWP

What's your definition of 'big running?" The bonepoint reference is a very good one - there's a GWP Alliance that breeds a similar dog - I'd look at an Alliance Breeder if it were me. There's a youtube guy that hunts his wires (Eric Forrester - ghostpoint kennels) and they're good dogs. You...

    Uncommon bird dogs

I've seen some of the less-common breeds mentioned in the thread in action a few times - most notably the GLP and SM. I'd own one but can't. get. past. the. tail. Too weird - I feel the same about most setters though. We have a pocket of both GLP ad SM aficionados locally. These folks are...

    S3 Apex Steel?

Anyone try it out? It looks like a lower velocity steel offering - 1250 fps? I like the idea of lower velocity steel - pellet size matters much more than starting velocity when it comes to effective range. However, I've never come across this brand of shells before. Just saw it online today...

    French Brittany Thoughts?

I'm with you DZeb! I prioritize bird finding/pointing and retrieving equally. There are quite a few pointing dog guys that are heavy on the former and indifferent on the latter. Not me. The Germans refer to the retrieve as 'the second hunt' and prioritize game recovery above all else. Wild...

    French Brittany Thoughts?

I've heard they are inclined to retrieve - is this inclination more pronounced than with American brits? How big are your dogs? I wouldn't mind a smaller dog but would wonder how well a 30lb dog would handle retrieving roosters. Maybe not an issue? 30-35 lbs would be a pretty portable.

    Drahthaar experiences

Aggression is a serious issue. My (admittedly limited) understanding is that the VDD would never allow aggressive dogs to be bred in the first place - there are breed wardens involved, so there is a lot of oversight to the breeding process. Dogs displaying aggression would quickly get culled...

    Drahthaar experiences

I'm curious to hear about what it's like to own and hunt a DD. I'd especially like to hear similarities and contrasts between other breeds that you all have owned. I've been to a VDD training day and seem some in action, but that's just one day. What's it like to live with one for 12+ yrs...

    Climate change and breed selection

Our season is winding down, and for about the 20th th year in a row I've hunted in far more days where heat, not cold, was a bigger factor in tems of dog management. This is unusual where I'm from. Typically we have some warm days in October but things cool off quickly. Not so for the last...

Thanks for your reply! Please tell me more about the breedings that you went with, and also about your started dog. I read everywhere about field trial washouts or culls that don't make a field-trailer's string at around 9 -18 months. Who would you call if looking for a suitable started dog...

Thanks so much for the reply - I'm considering going the started dog route as well, mainly to ensure that the dog already has a solid(ish) retrieve. It seems too dicey to go with a pup in these breed even if there are retrieving parents IMHO. Did you go with a field trial washout? Thanks again!

    English pointer fans

As it pertains to pheasant hunting, I'd like to hear from EP owners on their dog's performance on phez. How's the retrieve/tracking on your particular dog? Have you found breedings that seem to work better than others for producing EPs that do well? I like gsps but would like to try an ep if...

    Hotspotting

Hi All, Don't know where to post this, so I guess I'll put it here. Does this forum have a 'hotspotting' policy? I doubt it given how much of it happens on the regional boards. I see nothing wrong with general reports (east river SD, North Central KS etc because everyone knows there are...

English Pointers on Pheasants - what's been your experience?

I'd love to hear about EPs and pheasants - always wondering about tracking and after-the-shot capabilities of EPs - I know they'll find birds - do the runners drive them crazy? Which lines have you found to be the most natural retrievers? Thanks!

Keep Public Lands in Public Hands

Please contact your legislators to voice opposition to turning over Federal Lands to the States. History has shown us that States don't do a very good job of retaining those lands - Federal Lands are here for us and our children, and our grandchildren. State lands can be sold and/or closed to...
