How do Brits age as hunters? Some breeds seem to age better than others - are they still productive at, say, 11, or is that a geriatric dog that will see very little time on the ground? Not talking multiple day hunts.

I could live with an EP tail or a very tight setter tail, but nothing that is too moppy SM's and the like are too much for me. Labs are fine. A tail on a Brittany looks awful to my eye - looks like a dust mop, but whatev - to each their own.

I've heard they are inclined to retrieve - is this inclination more pronounced than with American brits? How big are your dogs? I wouldn't mind a smaller dog but would wonder how well a 30lb dog would handle retrieving roosters. Maybe not an issue? 30-35 lbs would be a pretty portable.

Thanks so much for the reply - I'm considering going the started dog route as well, mainly to ensure that the dog already has a solid(ish) retrieve. It seems too dicey to go with a pup in these breed even if there are retrieving parents IMHO. Did you go with a field trial washout? Thanks again!
